1963 Ford 2000
Hi all,

I'm a first time tractor owner and I bought a 1963 Ford 2000 gas tractor for our new property. Before I hooked up any implements, it ran great. As soon as I hooked up the bush hog, it cut for about 25 yards, then sputtered and died. It won't do any better, so I started investigating. Here's what I've found. Under load, it sputters, loses power, and dies rather quickly.

1. It has good fuel flow to the carburetor. I removed the inline filter the previous owner put on it, and I replaced the sediment bowl assembly. Fuel streams out if the valve is open.

2. If I turn the fuel off as soon as it dies and open the fuel drain on the bottom of the carburetor, I don't get 1/4 to 1/2 cup of fuel, more like 2 tablespoons. If I leave the fuel valve on with the drain plug open, fuel doesn't stream out. It starts out strong, then peters out.

3. I disassembled, thoroughly cleaned, and rebuilt the M/S TSX 765 carb, and it still does it, albeit a bit smoother.

4. It has a new distributor cap, plugs, plug wires, and has been converted to electronic ignition.

Any help would be awesome..!!

Thanks,

Joel

Just a wild guess... is there a fuel tank vent that is clogged?

I have engines run perfect and then die is sputter... more than once it was a plugged fuel cap vent.

Fuel ran fine when I pulled the hose... guessing the larger diameter hose let air in.

Maybe try with fuel cap off for a couple of minutes?

have you checked the fuel filter. Look to see if someone has installed some type of inline filter also

Pull the cap off the fuel tank and try it again. Cap is supposed to be vented. Vent gets clogged, blocking off replacement air in tank as engine uses it, creates a slight vacuum and inhibits fuel from flowing out. The other thing is the muffler is right under the tank which heats the fuel, making it more volatile and chance of vapor lock is present.....vapor lock: fuel boiling at a restriction in the line, limiting the amount of fuel in the line to the carb.

Both are vacuums of different sources/sorts.
