I think you're right - I have attached a photo. Is this the reverser?[/QUOTE

yes that is the aux. trans but it could be a reverser a stepdown trans or a step down and up trans but move that lever and see what happens

yep.. and I knew it would be a 4spd one we startedtalking aux trans...

starting to make sense now.. :)

This morning I confirmed that it is a reverser. It was engaged, but in reverse. When I switched it, the PTO turned clockwise as expected, and the tractor lurched forward a tiny bit, instead of backwards as before. With the tires on the ground, the PTO works when the clutch is engaged - in both directions.

Will the PTO clutch engage even if the main clutch is slipping?

Not to get off topic, but my tractor has a 730 Loader. I assume I will have to remove that to split the tractor?

if it won't drive(move) but pto spins, then the front of the tranny is getting power .. and at least thru to the counter shaft probably...

I'd next suspect a broken pinion coupler tube, pinion gear, or sheared rivitrs in teh ring gear, or a broken axle.

pretty much in that order.

Doesn't the fact that when I jacked up the rear end and spun a tire, the other tire spun the opposite way, rule out an axle problem?

Also, when I had it jacked up, the tranny went through the gears with no problems, and the wheels turned.

With a double clutch, can one disc be toast while the other is ok? Would that account for the PTO working properly?

I really appreciate all this great advice. I've learned to ask the experienced folks before taking things apart.

you have a 4spd trans and a pre tranny.. you cannot have a dual clutch.

the reason it may work jacked up is because there is no load. a broke axle can grab at the break site and still turn under no load.

if pto works and wheels won't move.. input is getting power...

If I have a broken axle, shouldn't I be able to hear the differential turning? I hear nothing wrong when I engage the clutch, and the wheels move just a tiny bit. Also, is my differential similar to an automotive one? Are there two half-shafts? Wouldn't one turn even if the other was broken?

I received my shop manual yesterday, so I'm ready to get to work. Thanks again for all the help.

Now that we have finally established that the pto spins with the tires on the ground and the transmission in gear, we can rule out the clutch as the immediate problem (like SoundGuy said). There is zero possibility that your tractor has a double clutch.

Will the tractor move with one broken axle? Definitely not. The differential will always send the power to the tire with the LEAST resistance. A broken axle would be that path. Keep in mind that a broken axle might grip enough at the break point to appear normal under no load.

Try jacking up one tire. With the trans in low gear, attempt to forcably turn the tire that is off the ground. Rock it back and forth as hard as you can. There is a good chance that you will notice something slip and possibly HEAR where it is coming from, since the machine is not running.

Dont take your loader off yet. Knowing what we do at this point, I am putting my money on a broken axle or stripped axle splines. Let us know what happens.

yep.. stripped hub/axle, broken couple tube.. pinion.. ring gear..e tc.

i think I'd pop open the diffy fill plug. or squander 13$ on a hyd top cover gasket / oring kit and pull the seat and top cover off / pull pto shaft out.

heck.. by the time you do all that, probably easier to pull left axle trumpet abd be done with it.

do the jack em up trick like strum suggested first.

might be able to see coupler tube from dipstick cover / pto shifter cover..

i just got done working on one with a broke axle and with it jacked up the wheels spun normally but with it on the ground no movement at all

Sigh...

Yesterday morning, I decided to take a fresh look at his problem. After a few minutes of thinking, I pressed the clutch in by hand and heard the pressure plate creak. When I released it, it kept creaking until the pedal was almost completely released. Hmm. Since the wheels turned with no load, it wondered if it could be as simple as... yup. I loosened the clutch stop bolt a couple turns, and presto - problem solved. We couldn't see the forest through the trees - it just needed the clutch adjusted.

I feel like I've wasted a lot of your time, but I'm glad to know there are many people willing to offer their expertise to those of us that are still learning.

Thank you!

Greg

I'm glad you got it figured out.

However, I am puzzled as to how the PTO would have worked if the clutch just needed some adjustment (with the tractor in gear and the tires on the ground). :confused2:
