1960-70's J. Deere Manhiem Germany Tractor Transmissions

I just bought my neighbors 1972 820 diesel German made deere and am having trouble understanding the reverse gears. A manual I got on line says it has 4 reverse gears but the tractor will only go into reverse in one gear. Some of the online searches show there to be only 1 reverse gear. Do any of you have any insight on what the deal is? were there 2 different types of transmissions?

That link is exactly my problem. You see it says 4 reverse gears on the spec sheet, But on the shifting diagram that is below the dash it shows that reverse is only attained in 3rd gear! My tractor will only go into reverse in 3rd gear.

Does your tractor have a parking brake? Does it have 7 or 8 forward speeds? 1st shift pattern is parts key #4. I sold 820 3 cyl tractors when then were new and all I remember selling had 8 speeds forward.

There were some oddities . Some of those 20 series Mannheims only had 7 gears ahead. Parking brake instead of a park lock . Open Center hydraulics when shopping for loader valves.

It does not have a parking brake but has a parking gear. However the decal on the dash shows no reverse gear for the right hand shifter. I am beginning to think that previous owner may have replaced the decal with the wrong one. It shows 8 forward gears and no reverse.

My tractor has the bottom decal on it, but it shifts like the decal in the center. and in the 820 factory manual it says it has 4 reverse gears.

The seven speed transmission was called a sliding gear transmission. The eight speed was a collar shift. The majority seem to have the eight speed. The only problem with the seven speed is availability of parts. It may be more appealing to a collector due to more rare, but parts are very rare to repair.

I thought the difference between the 7 and 8 speed was a block in the shifters that locked out 8th gear. All the gears are still in the the trans.

To make matters worse there were 2 different model 820 built in Mannheim. One built for N American sales & one built for European sales. The N American sales model lists 2 different trans as jd110 stated.
