I have no problem smelling antifreeze when a water pump is leaking. I was wondering, if it is being burned in the cylinder, does it have a distinctive odor?

hmm.. couldn't tell ya. I too can smell raw antifreeze.. but once you atomize it and mix it with diesel or gas exhaust.. i doubt I'd smell it.. especially in concentrations so low that you don't see steam..

Maybee if it was pouring out like a mosquitor fogger .. maybee..

hindsight is always 20-20. I rather do all the diagnostics and probing prior to tear down but in this case he is no worse off by tearing it down. Piston was a goner anyway. Is he going to inspect the head and the block under black light? probably head gasket was hemorrhaging a bit of antifreeze internally till the rig had a stroke:D

When you say there was no antifreeze in the oil.How do you know. Todays oils and coolant emulsify so the only way to tell is an oil analisys. The coolant wont settle to the bottom of the pan like it did in the old days. I found this out the hard way.

UOA is not the sole way to determin oil/water emulsion, as long as there is sufficient amount of water.....Oil/water emulsion is quite easy to see if there is a large quantity of water in the oil.

working on antiques, I get to see alot of 'milkshakes'.

The oil that came out of this machine was less than 30hrs old, hadn't even sooted up completely yet.. was still a dark golden brown.

Yeah.. I know it may still have a moisture content to it that a UOA will find.. but it's for sure not milkshake emulsified.
