1863 chugin and stallin

I have a 1996 cub 1863 with the 18 hp kohler motor and the problem i and having is when i go sideways across the hill behind my house it wants to stall and blows black smoke, its fine on the level and going straight up and down the hill . When i take the air filter off there is oil under the filter and around the carb. I have never had a problem with it on this hill ever till now. the oil is not over filled the fuel filter is new. could i have a serious engine problem?

which side is down? of it is a flat head engine the valve cover may be filling with oil if the tractor is tilted towards the valve cover which would blow oil or black smoke out of the breather....i had the same problem witha briggs and straton 12.5 hp vertical flathead and i tried going across the hill the opposite way and it solved the problem.

it seems to do it with both sides down. but more with the left side down. i have cut the same hill for 4 years with this tractor the same way and never had a problem till this week. i tried re routeing the breather from the carb area to outside the tractor and i still had the same problem and nothing coming out of the breather. i also still got oil inside the filter around the carb with the breather outside the tractor. it seems like it is getting in the carb another way. could it be a valve problem and if it is could i fix it myself ?

Black smoke = too much fuel; blue smoke = oil burning. I would guess float is hanging up when tilted.

Well i just mowed again and had no problems at all so maybe i had some bad gas or something. if it happens again ill try giving the carb a good cleaning.

Funny how sometime things fix themselfs. ill keep my fingers crossed and the blades down!
