I am having a fit with my new toy. I can't even get my yard mowed once(approx. 2 acres) without having to blow the radiator out two or three times. In the past this tractor had the driveshaft fail which pushed the radiator up which wore the fan blades down some. I don't think that is causing the problem though as the fan has no problem sucking debris up against the radiator screen and also on the radiator some as well. the engine is running around 195 to 205 farenheit with the radiator blown out and it will hit 230 when the radiator needs blown out. Is there anything I can do to alieviate this problem? I hope someone can help me. Thanks again, Justin Altemeier

Justin, is the mower deck discharging as it should?, I'm wondering if a baffle or plate is missing somewhere causing mowed up debris to be blown into the engine compartment.

Hello again Joel. I have looked at that possibility but the deck is discharging fine. There isn't a screen on the bottom of the frame as there is on the smaller gas engined tractors like my old 1541. I don't think cub even had a screen on the bottom of the frame though. Any other ideas of how I could prevent the dandelion seeds and stuff from plugging my radiator?

Is there a grill on the tractor? There is obviously something missing that is causing it to suck up debris onto the radiator. That is definately the problem. If it is coming from underneath the radiator there must be a shroud or something of the sort that is out of place or missing. A quick fix would be to use some type of fine mesh screen to block off the area that the debris is coming from. Maybe even some cardboard under the radiator sheilding dirt from coming up from the ground. If it is sucking through a hole in the front you will have to use something that will still allow air to pass through or else you will still have a problem.

Justin, if the fan blades hit the radiator I would suspect some damage to the radiator. Perhaps some of the tubes between the tanks have been collapsed restricting the amount of coolant flowing through the radiator?

Hello again all! Let me clarify the situation. I have just had the radiator recored and I straightened the radiator mount. the fan has been into the shroud in the past but not now. I am going to try to put window screen in the bottom of the dash cavity between the console and the radiator screen I also will try to put some sort of barrier under the radiator as well. I know I can't be the only one having this sort of trouble with this model tractor. And yes the front grille and side screens are inplace and ok. Justin

Justin, this may be a silly question, but could the fan have been replaced with a unit pitched the opposite way? Meaning it's pushing air in the direction the system was not designed? You also mentioned screen/mesh under the dash. Don't most cubs have that from the factory? I know mine sucks cool air from under the dash & blows all the hot air out the front grille.

Yes, the fan is pushing air the right direction. It is drawing air from the dash side of the radiator and blowing it out the front of the tractor. I prolly should replace the fan just to be safe but the debris getting in is a problem I have to overcome as well. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I'm not familiar with the diesel tractor but is that how the fan normally works? Everything I've worked on - gas and diesel cars, trucks and RV's always have the fan pulling cool air from outside, through the radiator, and back over the engine. Blowing the opposite way is blowing hot air from the engine through the radiator. That just seems wrong to me.

Hello again: Yes the fan on this tractor is working right the fan draws air from the rear side of the radiator and blows it across the engine this tractor is set-up backward as to the norm. The radiator sits behind the engine not in front.
