Kind of a sad story, Chris. It is an original 841D with (IIRC) a little under 2000 hours. But it is an early one without the dynamic balancer. About 5 years ago I was plowing snow and the crankshaft broke. I managed to round up all the parts to do a field-installed balancer kit on the original block. Some of these parts are different from the factory fitted balancer which was introduced to cure the broken crank problem. But ambition has been on backorder and I have gotten over the idea of owning a 4 cylinder prior Ford. I have pretty much decided to bone it out rather than invest the time in putting it back together. They do run cheap, I will say that.

oh man that is sad.

I do know alot of people like the later diesels, an early gassers. I must say that after looking for 2000/3000 I drove alot of gassers.. and really was not impressed at the range of issues with the holley carbs.. Not that my 3000d isn't a fuel miser.. but I've never actually owned a 144 or 172d to compair to...

I still am a NH technician. And you are very much mistaken.

The service schools I sat through in Atlanta said not to, as we were having some issues with that at the time. They may have changed what they recommended or it might have been the service tech's opinion.

Well, there is a fair amount of personal opinion inserted into service training by the instructors. Some of it is great info, some not so much. But the little blocks of wood are shipped with many models for a reason. And I have never had to unstick a clutch whose pedal was blocked down.

Yep.. as much R&D goes into the engineering of these aprts.. it's hard to believe the manufacturer who is provifing you with a wood block on a string is wrong.

OK guys...

Happy ending to my pto clutch delema. Had a mechanic over to help with a few things. I am getting a sub frame backhoe and had questions about the hydro attachment. Thats another story...
My PTO clutch works fine now. He watched the clutch pedal as I moved it and determined a foot step bracket that was bent cheated the pedal from bottoming out. He preyed the bent bracket and presto! My PTO will shift while the tractor is running.
DUH! For a moment I felt stupid. Then I said "It's a miracle!"
I asked him how much I owed him and he said "Six hundred bucks, miracles cost extra!"
Ha Ha LOL...
I was so **** happy I spent all day working on her. I did the usual Oil, Filter & grease(10 hours over schedule), fuel filter, cleaned the air filter, a general clean up. Took the control panel off and found a HUGE nest. Vacuumed that out with shop vac. Part of the wiring harness to the gauge cluster was chewed through. I taped that back up to original and lubed the shifting linkages.
Overall she looks ok for 19 years old!

Thanks everyone for your input with this.
Mark

Lots of expertise out there on the 1720 and much appreciated.
Thanks JC Jetro for your earlier advice to me on my cracked head woes on my 1710.
I have PTO woes on my 1720
The outer shaft spins no matter whether the engine is running or not and no matter what the setting of the operating lever.
I notice mention of an electricsl override switch. Am I negecting some simple step in making the shaft turn?
This tractor has only been used onroad as a shopping centre trolley retieval tow machine, so I doubt whether the PTO has ever been activated in the life of the machine.
Any advice appreciated. I don't like the sound of the tractor split. Sounds easier to wreck the thing and buy another tractor
