I recently bought a 1991 1720 4X4. When I tested it the 2WD/4WD lever operated so I didn't think much about it but now that I own it it doesn't seem to come out of 4WD when I shift the lever. Does anyone have recommendations for checking on this. I saw a recent thread from someone with the opposite problem. Thanks!

Does the lever move to the disengaged position or does the lever not want to move. Did you try going backward and forward while trying to get it to disengage.

The lever is rather difficult to move but usually moves after a little tugging. Usually I have just shifted the lever and tried moving forward a little while braking to see if the front wheels are turning. I haven't tried backing up after shifting, I'll give that a try.
When I originally asked the seller how to switch between 4WD and 2WD he said he didn't know as he just kept it in 4WD- hence the need for me to replace to front tires right away:)

Pull up on the lever puts in 4x4, Push down on the lever is 2 wheel drive. Test to see if it is working in 4 wheel by taking a tight turn and see if one tire jerks in a tight turn (one tire will be silpping on the inside circle. Post results here. Tire slippage is what wears out the front tires {and more})

This guy (the previous owner) should never have owned a tractor.

CCM1720, I was the one that posted about my FWD not working. Like you, when I bought the tractor, the lever was in the FWD position. And I assume that it had been there a long time. An older lady (she died) had owned and driven the tractor for years just to feed her rabbits and chickens, and her step son didn't know much about the tractor. I will say that I got this tractor for a very good price and can afford to put al little into it. See my post for more info.

OK, I think my engagement lever IS working. I tried doing donuts and definitely seemed to see a difference when shifting between 2WD and 4WD. The front tires bit the gravel more when in 4WD. I also could tell a difference by stepping on the brake. In 4WD the tractor just wanted to keep moving and in 2WD, it would bog down. So thank you for your responses and testing help. Much appreciated!!
