1700 hydraulic problems

Hello Forum Members, I have a 1700 that was sitting for at least 8 years. It several hours to get her started. The FEL and 3 pt worked sporadically at first, lifting the bucket a foot or so and also minimal movement of the 3 pt. I drained the hydraulic system and cleaned the filter. The hydraulic fluid looked like coffee with a lot of cream. The filter was also pretty dirty. I filled the reservoir with 28 quarts of hydraulic oil (5 quarts to accommodate FEL).
Everything operated perfectly while I operated all components through their range. I then drove the tractor approximately 100 feet. When I tried to lift the FEL or operate the 3 pt nothing worked. The tractor still would drive properly. I checked the hydraulic fluid level and the level was above the full mark. I let the tractor sit for a week and tried it again. Same results.

Is my pump bad or going bad? Should I drain the hydraulic oil again and replace with new oil? Any other suggestions???

follow the smaller dia pipe from the hyd pump (discharge line) to the relief device. it is located o the right side, behind lift arm control right on diffy housing. top diffy housing is where the seat is. remove the nut on the device, there is a spring and a poppet valve (conical shape). keep a bucket under the opening and turn the tractor on, be ready to collect the oil that might gush out. report back to see where we are.

If you did not clean out the bottom of the sump when you changed oil and washed off the filter, the filter can clog real quick. Bear that in mind as JC helps you diagnose your hydraulics.

JC, I'm a little confused what you are describing. Can you show me with a picture or diagram? Is what you are describing in one of these links?

Phil,

I had several very complete threads that covered the subject matter. I had uploaded the pics on my picture sharing account and since then they changed my subscription to fee based. I did not renew and as a result I lost my pics. It is a very time consuming thingn but I will try tomorrow to see if I can upload pertinent pictures In the same thread thru a different hosting site. I will have the info you needed hopefully tomorrow.

Your links are okay but it does not explain the procedure or diagnostic. stay tuned, we will get to the bottom of your problem.

It will be tremendous amount of work to go back to my old threads and find the appropriate pictures and put inin the right place. Dang Image shack deleted most of my pics to their very basic limit. Below here I will post a few pics that might help you diagnose your problem.

Below is your suction and discharge pump from your hyd pump. The larger dia is the suction side coming from the side of the diffy with a filter screen behind it.
The smaller dia is the discharge pipe going to relief device. Relief device will set your system pressure and in case do dead head diverts glow to diffy so you pump will not damage. You have a gear type, positive displacement pump blockage in the line and something has to give. Centrifugal pump can free wheel for a short period but not PDP.







The small dia pipe goes in to the relief device as pictured.

This is the guts of your relief device.




What I would like for you to do and report back is , take the relief device off , put a bucket in front to the hole. make sure cover the are with tarp or do it outside to avoid a mess. Start your tractor for a few second and tell me if any oil comes out. We'll go from there.
