I have just purchased a YM1700 and it seems to sound like it has a loud knocking noise. Is this normal?

It does seem to almost go away when you run it up past 2000 rpms.

Thanks,

Mike

Yup, probably just normal, these little diesels are pretty noisy. If you're really worried stick a manual oil pressure gauge on it and check the pressure, if it's a bottom end knock the pressure will be low. Could also drain the oil and check the filter for metal debris.

edit...By the way I just bought my little YM1700 a couple of days ago.

Clanking like a half dozen idiots banging on a manhole cover with sledges? Sounds like a rod is just about to punch through the block?

Everything's normal.

Seriously, get some Power Service (or other additive claimed to improve Cetane). PS's white bottle if your climate gets cold enough to gel diesel, or preferably silver bottle which has the most Cetane additive. Add the maximum recommended. 3.2 oz per 5 gallons diesel. This will tame the harshest part of that racket noticeably. But that's still an inherently noisy engine. (My YM240 is the US version of YM2000, and YM2000 is the larger-bore twin of your YM1700).

I have two sound files posted online that you can listen to for comparison to yours. They are referenced from my sig, below. (scroll to the bottom of my Yanmar page.)

Thanks for the reply. I listened to the sound file and it is very similar to my sound.

Where do I find Power Service additive? I live in Georgia.

Thanks,

Mike

P.S. - nevermind about the additive- they sell it at Advance Auto

I get mine at Autozone. Any parts house, or a truck stop with counter sales, should have PS or a similar brand.

Welcome Mike. If you just bought it from an induvidual I would seriously think about changing all the fluids and filters so you now what you have. What part of Ga. are you from I'm in Walton County.

My 1700 sounds like a sledge hammer inside of the motor. The best money you can put in it. is a water pump.

YM195, the US version of YM1700, had a water pump. But I'm not convinced you need to add one. YM1700 is already designed to put out its rated power continuously and never overheat. If you don't intend to run it flat out you probably don't need to add complexity to what is an elegantly simple design.

You do need to keep the cooling system up to spec however. If it wasn't already done in the reconditioning process, these all need the radiator rodded out after 30 years.

I did change all the fluids. The oil was quite black but had no indication of metal particals, and the hydraulic fluid was, well lets just say not looking like hydraulic fluid any more.

Do you guys think that I could do an engine flush on this without hurting it?

I do think I am going to add a temp and oil guage instead of the dummy light.

Thanks for all the responses.

Black oil is normal for desiel engines.Thick black sludge looking is a good sign of poor maintenance.I think I would be reluctant to put any harsh chemicals in it and just change the oil and filter after let say 25hrs. and see what it looks like. Also the oil pan and valve cover can be easily removed and cleaned up by hand and then you can be able to see if you might have a problem. I change my oil and filter every 100 hrs.also did you clean your Hyd. screen? I would though flush the cooling system, as you know it gets pretty warm in the summer down here.

Gizmo Crazy ain't it in the SE. In the last two weeks in Ga. Below freezing then 10" of snow up to the high 70's then down to the mid 30's and now 4 days of rain with flood warnings.Geeeze I wish it would figure out what it going to do.

Where is the filter screen located for the hydraulic/Trans oil? I know where to fill it and where the drain plug is. Other than that this is a new machine to me.

Thanks

It is behind a triangular shaped plate with 3 bolts. It is kind of under the right foot rest. Remove the hydraulic line then the plate. It is a tubular shaped screen. Clean it out and replace it and refill with new fluid (JD303 type hydraulic transmission). (of course you should drain the fluid first)
