1700 Crank but no start

Brian,

When it gets super cold here I go between 20 to 25 second and make sure the glow plug indicator (resistance wire) glows red nice and bright before I started. Last week I had a bit of issue starting as my battery was near the self destruct date (3 yr battery and god forbid if it should last one day more) , so I bought a new battery with a bit more of CCA and she perked right up. On a mechanical injector pump the volume of diesel it pumps is very small and it only build pressure when it encounter the stiff spring in the injector. Liq fuel is not compressible but air is , so if you have a bit of air, the pump runs and keep pulsating that volume of air without pushing fuel passed the injector spring and nozzle.

I don't like to loosen the fittings on the injectors because I never get them tight the first time. I am afraid of distorting them as you really need a pipe fitting wrench that supports the fitting. Between the feed tubes, air filter and loader hoses it is a little tricky getting them "no leak" tight.

That is very true, so that's why in the first place we need to be careful not allow air in the system. I say that but I am guilty of it too. I was mowing the ditch in fron it of my property , my diesel was about less than 1/4 of tank full and I insisted to finish the job before I returned to the barn. I was not not on flat surface and the fuel was slushing around and going side ways caused some air to get sucked in and tractor died. It took me more than 45 minutes to fix it where it could me 5 minutes to go to the barn and top off the tank. Saying that , when I have to loosen the injector nut I for sure take my time, get a wrench that perfectly fits it and have have enough room to do it right. When I tighten it I would make sure I am not crossing the thread and cause more havoc. I might have done this no more than 4 times as long as I remember and culprit was me every single time.
