1602D trans fluid requirements

I have read a few recent posts concerning transmission fluid requirements for Yanmar tractors. I am a little concerned. I purchased my 1602D last year and work it pretty hard with a Rhino field mower, box and back blades, and the Yanmar tiller for the wifes BIG garden. My question: The transmission fluid level was low when I bought the 1602 and I added almost two quarts of 80/90 gear lube. I have recently seen posts that this tractor should use the hydrolic trans fluids and not the heavy gear oils. Is this correct for the manual transmission in the 1602D??? There is a fill cap with dip stick marked OIL near the shift lever. It appears there are two drain plugs that should be used: they are on both on the rear axel housings near the bottom of the castings. Is this where a person drains the tranny and hydrolic system??? My three point works fine and gives no noise or problems. Thanks in advance for any help provided. I have learned much from all the Yanmar owners on this forum.

I'm no expert, but I do know that the oil in the rear is also used for your Hyd. system. 80/90 is much too heavy for your Hyd pump, especially when it's cold. I have an F15D and I use a product available at Tractor Supply Co. called Hydro-Trans and I haven't had any problems.
The front Diff. uses 80/90.

On Yanmar YMxx02 or 20 models, use universal Hy-Trans rated with a specification of JD20A. The YMxx01, 00 and 10 models use Hy-Trans rated for JD303. Most universal hy-trans is rated for both. All F series use the JD20A rated material. Dave

Most of the Yanmars hold about 2 gal. of trans/hydr. fluid, (plus loader and any other hydraulics) and the book says to change it every 300 hours. It's cheap insurance to change yours now. Then at least you have a starting point and know whats in there. Wal-Mart sell a JD-303 equiv. oil for around $5.00 a gallon. Or go to you local JD dealer.

In the YM1610-2002 size tractors, they take a little over 4 gallons. The YM2001D-2420 size takes about 5 gallons. YM2820, YM3110, etc take over 6 gallons. Walmart hy-trans works fine.

Thanks guys. I guess I better drain the system and use the proper stuff. I planned that chore for spring but I wil do it now. One last thing however, The hyd filter is a CAPA, CP145VL-35, marked the CAPA filter co, ltd, Japan. Anybody have a conversion pr part number from Napa, Wix, Purolator that will work? $63 via Yanmar, or less than a third that from Napa, Wix, Baldwin or Fram. Napa 1229, Wix 51229. Baldwin BT371-MPG. There normally is a cylindrical screen inside the transmission that should be pulled and cleaned as well. Often a cap held on by three bolts and sealed by an o-ring, but sometimes by a gasket. Not sure on your model without looking it up. The caps are usually aluminum and are fragile if you get too rambunctious with a screw driver prying them out, so be careful. The screen is in the sump behind the cap. Dave
