I found a nice used 16" one bottom plow for $100. Can my L2800HST 4wd with loaded R4s pull it through unbroken ground? Soil is little clay, not too many rocks. Maybe I should hold out for 12" or 14"? If it is questionable, I will probably pass on it.

I'm not an authority on the matter, but based on previous discussions your machine should have little trouble with any single-bottom plow.

Any other opinions?

I don't think that you will have any problems unless it is from spinning with the R4s. A lot depends on the type of soil that you have. It it was me, I would try to find a small two bottom instead of the single. A 2-12 would work fine with your tractor if the soil wasn't rock hard.

Wouldn't 1 16" be easier to pull than 2 12"? I will just be using it for 50' by 50' garden and maybe laying an underground dog fence.

If you have any trouble at all something is wrong.

If all plows were created equal it might. A old two bottom Ford, Ferguson or Massey plow will pull better and easier than any new single bottom plow.

The 25 horsepower 8N was designed to pull a 2 bottom plow, which it will do in most soils. Especially where you are breaking a limited size piece of ground like a garden your kubota will be perfect. I have an old Ferguson 2 bottom which I used to break gardens open for years with my 8N. If your tires start to spin just raise the lift arms a little and you're moving again, immediately drop the arms and go. I have ag tires which undoubtedly will make a slight difference for you, but as long as the soil isn't too wet(don't plow when it's wet, you'll get clogs that harden in the sun and get hard to break up, wait till it's dry)the tires shouldn't load up too bad so keep your hand on the lift lever for adjustments and have fun.

It may look like it's in good shape but looks can be deceiving. A good paint job can make a virtually worthless plow look new. Does it have the coulter wheel? I doubt if it has a tailwheel, most don't still have those if they're old plows. If it doesn't, the landslide has to be in excellent condition for it to run true behind the tractor. What type of soil are you talking about plowing?

You don't want to buy a plow that's in bad shape and possibly been welded. You'll likely frustrate yourself into just giving up on it if you do.

At $75 you probably can't go wrong though. Post some pics when you get it.

I am by no means an expert on ground engaging applications. In fact, I don't even own a plow. I HAVE been looking and researching for a 3x14" extensively though. I would love to find an old Massey Ferguson Model #66 in decent shape. I would never purchase one of the "new" plows available. I've learned everything I know from FarmWithJunk! Send him a PM. He will be a wealth of information.

Keep your eyes open and go to farm auctions. I picked up a like new model #66 3-14 about three years ago for $135.

It does have newer paint on it. I had my dad look at it. He has plowed since he was 12 years old, and he said it was in good shape. He wasn't sure if my tractor would pull it though. I don't think he has much interest or respect for the "yuppie-fied" compacts. He has older iron for his farm 8n, Ford 600, Ford 6600, Massey 135. He has and old Ford 2x12 and Massey 2x12 plow. Funny thing is, my dad seems to always come across good deals. Thats why I'm so tickled to get this plow so cheap. He found his Massey 135 diesel in great shape with 1200 original hours and the original discs and plows for that tractor for $5000 last year.

LOL! That's pretty funny. My father-in-law is the same way. He doesn't believe in 4WD (Front-wheel assist). I started a thread a while back entitled "4WD: Advantages, Disadvantages". I was wanting to get a consensus of opinions on whether 4WD was a good idea. My father-in-law is seriously old school like that. Needlessly to say, I have 4WD. If your father has that kind of experience and looked at it for you, you should be in good shape. But still post some pics when you get it!

I pull a 2/12 with a L2550 GTS. No problem.

Picked up my plow here is a couple of pictures. I'm posting an ID thread in the owning an operating forum. I know its a Ford. Its very solid and in excellent shape. Almost twice as heavy as the 1 bottom i looked at a TSC. I very happy with it, especially for $75.

That looks pretty decent from my extremely limited knowledge. The landslide looks like it's in good shape which is important since there is no tailwheel. This particular one doesn't have shins, just a moldboard and share. But they don't look too worn as far as I can tell. It looks to me like the coulter wheel is adjusted too far over but it could just be the angle of the photo. That's just a simple adjustment. Overall it looks like you made a steal. Congratulations!! Post some pics when you start turning over some sod!

Here are a couple more low angle shots that show the alignment better. Dad said the points were in good shape too. Now I need some instruction on how to set it up. I'm taking my blade off and hope it doesn't snow anymore. The weather looks like it might dry up enough this week to try it out.

That looks like they're both in the same plane. I believe the coulter wheel is supposed to be just slightly off from the edge of the moldboard. Something like a 1/4" to the right according to the pictures. I could be wrong though.

Y'all were right. It pulled just fine. Really couldn't tell it was back there until I got down around 10". I stayed around 8" and I didn't even spin a tire. I made my garden bigger. It's about 60' x 45' now.
