To make a long story short.

What is the third line on the remote for? My tractor doesn't have the third line and the backhoe seems to work OK but has trouble doing two functions at the same time. I notice that the connector for the third line is on the backhoe.

Long story.

I went to the local Mahindra dealer and asked for the 1538 with FEL and backhoe. I was told by the salesman that I could take the one on the lot now and the backhoe would be shipped. He stated that if I had any mechanical experience at all I could easily install the backhoe. (Was I clueless and most of you can tell where this story is going?)

My first tractor and I familiarized myself by reading the owners manual and breaking in the engine properly while waiting for the backhoe to arrive.

Long delay in getting the backhoe here and contacting the dealer I find out the salesman doesn't work there anymore (had to be let go because of problems). I have to talk to the manager and tell him what conversations I had with the salesman. Backhoe arrives which they forklift onto my trailer and send me on my way. Once at home and looking at things (I truly was clueless) I realize this isn't something I can do "easily". The tractor also didn't have a remote. I wasn't sure what powered the hoe I thought maybe the PTO drove a hydraulic pump on the backhoe itself.

I contacted the dealer and explained my frustration and asked if this is how they treat all their customers. I am OK with "some assembly required" but this seemed a bit much. They had me bring the tractor back in and told me the original price didn't cover installing a remote for the backhoe. I agreed to work with them (really need this) and after arrangement to pay for parts with free labor, about $800, they started on the work.

After getting the tractor home, again, I notice the hydraulic hoses are too short to remove the backhoe and had 3 ft extensions made.

I have run the backhoe for the first of a number of projects and after reviewing the manual for removal I notice that there is (apparently) supposed to be three lines from the remote. While removing the backhoe I looked for and found the third line inside the housing.

Whats up with this? Was it done wrong? They also didn't give me back my drawbar.

Thanks for your help.

Man oh man, I never would have attempted to install the backhoe from scratch myself, I'm a newbie too. It should have come with a manual that details the rather lengthy install process. I sure hope you have some hoists and what not because much of it is pretty heavy and bulky stuff like the boom and dipper for example.

The hydraulics essentially come from the loader controls and include the high pressure supply, a power beyond I think they call it and the return line or low pressure line back to the hydraulic tank.

I didn't pay extra to have mine come installed, no more than the factory price, so it sounds like someone pumped some sunshine up your backside.
Personally I don't think I'd trust that dealer you have very far.

The west coast distributor installed mine but it looks like they rushed the job and didn't get stuff torqued down the way they should have.
Also the backhoe for the 1538 comes from Kansas Machine Works or KMW in Sterling Kansas as did your loader. You should have have both of their manuals and no they weren't any extra cost either. Everything you need should be there including the seat swivel mechanism all the controls etc. That's assuming you got a 1538B backhoe of course and you didn't let them sell you some kinda 3PT hoe which will instantly void your tractor warranty if you install it.

BTW I did a lot of reading on this site before I bought anything or even did any serious shopping. At least half of my shopping was for a dealer I felt comfortalbe with and one I felt I could count of for honesty and for service after the sale. To me it was as important if not more so than the color of tractor I got. So far so good in those respects although I think I had expected more out of Mahindra than what I've been seeing.

The third line is a tank line or case line and are used to relieve any excess pressure buildup in the system. All three of my Mahindra's had it and so does my buddies machine. Form the sound of story you were taken for bit of a ride. When I bought my first machine the backhoe wasn't available but when it came in it was installed at no extra cost.

How many hoses for the BH. If memory serves me there should be three. If you have the BH unhooked do you have two of the tractor hoses connected together?:confused3:

sounds as if the installer plugged the hoses into the auxiliary ports and did not install a power beyond specifically for the BH?

Three hoses, two connected together without the hoe installed, otherwise you'll deadhead the pump or something and of course it ain't covered under warranty. LOL

Maybe rback33 will chime in, he works at KMW.

There are only two hoses at the tractor but three at the backhoe. The third line is tucked inside the backhoe housing.

The Mahindra owners manual shows a remote hook up with only two hoses on the last two pages. The 1538B (backhoe) owners manual shows three, with two of those connected together when the backhoe is removed.

I need to know if this is an issue or not. Should I get a hose made to connect the two remote lines together on the tractor when the backhoe is off?

YES! its definitely an issue. You need to get those clowns at you dealer to get that tractor set up properly for the BH. Your new BH will not operate properly and if memory servers me the relief and or the port reliefs relieve into that tank line which you say is not connected. Call them and ask if they put a power beyond kit on it or they just winged it and made up hoses. They should know better. What else do they sell besides Mahindra?:confused2:

What he said. It sounds like the totally flew by the seat of their pants on this. As stated, when you remove the backhoe, two lines get plumbed together. Do you have the backhoe manual? It clearly shows how it should be plumbed.

This is the Co. Schow's Inc. The original salesman doesn't work there anymore.

Yes, I have the backhoe manual, that is what brought me here because I could see that things didn't match the manual.
