My 1533 is due for the 50 hour service and wanted to know aside from changing fluids, filters and checking bolts etc.. is there anything else I should be doing / looking for?

I will be using MF Permatran III for the Transmission Fluid but not sure what brand to use for the engine oil. For the temperature range this time of year I was looking at SAE 20W, 10W-30 and in owners manual the oil must meet or exceed MIL-L 46152...any recommendations?

Use straight SAE30 that is rated for diesel engines

Use synthetic Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40 from Wal-Mart or your local auto supply. It is the exact same oil as Mobil Delvac 1 5W-40 synthetic with a different label. It's a heavy-duty diesel oil at a good price that you can run year around and it is easier to get than some other synthetic oils.

I agree. For the cost of the tractor, I would use synthetic, and PRETTY PLEASE, DO NOT BUY A FRAM FILTER. Your tractor does not deserve that!!

JMHO.

I am getting ready to do my 50 hour service (after I called for a dealer price of over 650 bucks). I have read the above and have a few questions.

Should I buy the filters and oil from my dealer for warranty issues?

If not what filter brand for oil and tranny?

I look at the manual and it seams easy enough. Please let me know if there are any common mistakes made on this service.

Thanks again and thanks for the posts on the snowblower post.

You can use whatever brand oil and filters you want, and as long as they meet manufacturer specs, in this case MF, your warranty is good. Having said that, you will probably have to get your hydraulic, fuel, and air filters from MF unless NAPA or some of the other chains have started carrying them in the past few months. Oil filter should be no problem to find elsewhere.

I recommend using Permatran III or Permatran 821 XL as I believe it is now since it all carries the AGCO label, and the engine oils in the posts above are good oils. I personally use Chevron. There are several good ones out there.

It does look easy in the manual, and 95% is on the 1533. It's that 5% spent trying to grease the brake and clutch pedals that is a pain.

Is there any reason why people do not recommnend the mf or agco brand engine oil?

Why go half way synthetic? Amsoil makes a synthetic version of Permatran (Synthetic Hydraulic Transmission Oil {ATH}). and some unbeatable synthetic diesel oils. Much better lubrication at low temperatures (shorter warm ups).
Check out the difference at there web site. amsoil.com

If it is not broken, don't fix it. I would stick with Permatran. There is nothing wrong with Permatran, since it is engineered for MF. Amsoil will not bother to have any of their oils certified, so they won't get any of my money.

I think it is broken. My tractor they recommend 20 to 30 min warm up times below 24(F) degrees. and even longer below -2. We get that all the time here.
That is a good as mineral based oil gets. Even if you have that kind of time to waste, how much wear are you getting while it runs (with minimal lubrication), all that time warming up? That is why in expensive engines (like aircraft), that have to be able to operate in these low temps. they are using synthetic.
