1515 cub starter draging

Hi everyone.I have a cub with a new starter that will engage the flywheel and turn3/4 to 1 full turn.This was done by jumping stright to the starter.It seams to start to drag.On the next try it wont even engage flywheel. Engine will turn buy hand easy.Jump starting was done with 774 cca in a runing truck.After spinning flywheel, starter gear will sometimes retract sometimes not. starter will spin fast on the ground.Do these starters need to be shimed.Did i get a bad starter. Thanks.

I read thru the service manual for the 15hp Kohler Command and the only reference to shims for the starter were to "note if there are spacers behind the starter during disassembly to make sure they are replaced on the same bolts". I would take to mean that some engines need spacers due to manufacturing tolerances. Maybe there were spacers and they fell off when the starter was replaced.

Hi OldMachinist,Thank u for ur reply.When i removed old starter there were no shims present.When starter engages it cranks strong for3/4 to maybe 2 turns and stops.Acts like weak battery but can not be battery,jumping from diesel truck with 2 batts and runing,useing heavy duty jumper cables.Useing tractor ingnition system only turns starter but it does not engage flywheel. ?????????? Thanks.

Is the new starter a Kohler starter or a aftermarket one. I've had to shim aftermarket starters to get them to engage right before. It shouldn't take much (.015"-.020"). You can cut shims from a soda can until you find the thickness you need.

You are jumping from the truck to the tractor battery? If so you may have a dirty or bad gound connection between the battery & the engine.. Just a thought..
