1965 Massey Ferguson 135
Hey y'all this is my first time posting on here. I just bought a 135 Massey Ferguson 4 cyl gas. This is the first tractor that I have ever owned so kinda new to this. So my question is that when I pick up heavy implements with the the three point hitch I can hear a slight clanking noise. Everything is working as it should I can just hear a change in noise. Is this a problem or is this normal?
Thanks

It sounds as though the pump support pin may have broken off. The head of it is diamond shaped, with 2 bolts holding it in on the right side of the differential case, just ahead of the cover, where the trans. dipstick is. On my 180, it sort of sounded like a rod bearing knocking. If you have a service manual, you'll see the pump support pin on the differential housing page. Massey hydraulic pumps somewhat float on these support pins. Probably not the best of engineering, but just my opinion.

Does the clanking noise sound like its coming from the engine? Since it is a gas engine could it be possible the timing is off? I know on older cars if the timing is advanced too far you will get a knock when the engine is put under load.

No it's coming from the top of the tranny

I'd still have to guess the pump support pin is broken. It's a pretty common occurrence.

Is it hard to replace

I do believe you'll need to remove the top cover. If the pin is broken, doubt you'll fish it back out that hole, and more than likely, the pump will drop. If you don't have a service manual, most definitely get one. There are some parts you need to disconnect on the control quadrant, when lifting it off, or you will cause some damage. If you have a hoist of some sort, it will make the job a lot easier. Then again, you may be able to do it by removing the cover the dipstick is located in. That's why it would be best to have a service manual. Even an I&T should show, & explain how to do it, although they can be rather sketchy, unless they have improved over the years.

I bought a Massey 180 about 10 years ago, and had that problem. I needed to get into the tranny to fix another problem anyway, so repaired it then. I had an OEM service manual for it, and it explained the procedure step by step.

Since you have the part number, you might try doing a Google search, and compare prices. Lots of aftermarket parts out there. You'll just need to compare shipping, to see if you're really saving any money.

And, yes, that is what the pin looks like.

G'day buster.
No you don't have to strip the tractor to replace a pump dowel pin ,remove the flange, only one side and if it is broken fish the broken pin out with one of them neodidlium magnets if you are having trouble in any way remove the side cover ,the one with the transmission dipstick next to your right heel when sitting on the tractor then you can put your hand inside and move the pump around to line it up buy or make a new gasket and do not overtighten the nuts they strip very easily the pins break because someone has had a brushhog or something pto driven that the pto shaft was to long being that when the implement is raised to the maximum height the telescopic shaft reaches it's limit of compression and it pushes the pto shaft into the housing and pushes the pump forward, that is one of the reasons the pump was located like that ,to try to make the design idiot proof ,anyway now you know how to do it.
Happy Days.
Hutch.
