My starter seems to be going Kaput. I have to "Malitize" it to get the engine to turn over.

Do they make rebuild kits? Or am I in for another $300 part?

Dave,

starter for 1700 can be had from Fleabay but it ain't cheap. If it were me, I'd start diagnostics and open it up to see may be I'd repair it. can't go down without a fight. I'd very careful opening it up. you can check winding, relay and contact. most probably worn out contact. what are some of the symptoms?

Thanks Dave, you saved me lots of trouble looking that up again. Even some dealers like Messicks carry the NH part and a 3rd party part, but the linked source is even cheaper than them. I certainly would not pay NH's price for a replacement starter.

I read on another thread that a Toyota starter will work, "Just Fine." It happens I have a 70's model Toyota Carina (not Corolla) in the barn with a blown motor. I have a spare motor but don't recall if it still has the starter attached. But maybe that dude will bolt right up and I'll have a cheap fix!

The guy who had the tractor before me didn't understand the concept of Glow plugs. He cranked it ad nauseam until it finally started. When I mentioned the glow plug indicator to him he tried to stick the key into the glow plug indicator hole...

I'm sure that contributed greatly to the untimely death of the starter. City folk!

Cheers!
Dave

I pulled an R&R on the starter this afternoon. The brushes were black on the end. The stator was a little black. I emery clothed the brushes and took a couple of swipes to shine up the stator. A little grease for good measure on the bushings. After a one hour jigsaw puzzle session and I'm back in business.

New Holland will have to buy their Friday beer on someone else's dime this week!

Cheers,
Dave

A while back, Jinman posted this starter resource link. I've been saving it, just in case, you know?

I bought a starter over the phone from DB about a month ago.

Unfortunately for us locals they no longer have a "counter service". That kind of pissed me off since I could have went there and picked it up that day instead of waiting on FedEx.

I used to go to their shop with my Grandfather when I was a kid. Back then they would rebuild his starter or alternator in just a hour or two.

Despite the lack of counter service I highly recommend DB.
