So true JohnThomas. We even learned one has not changed his oil after 80 years of use.
The subject of the life of oil has been around for a long time. After we moved to Rotella Synthetic I knew there was less need to change the low use engines but it cleans so well the 10-40 year old engines (even gas) the oil would look dirty. I tested Filter Only changes and found that was all that was needed to clear the oil back to more like new oil color in our case. 13 hours will be about all we put on our Ford F700 truck a year so we just change the filter every year or two for the last few years. It hangs down so I change it Cold so pulling it will get anything trapped or settled out after shut down. Typically I fill it to about 90% so I do not have to add oil after changing out only the filter.
The info that major oil companies like Valvoline and Mobil do not put a shelf life on their motor oils indicates it can set in the jug for a long time without going bad. I do agree stored motor oil specs may be superseded over time for a newly purchased vehicle but in the case of a 40 year old engine that will never be a concerned about how long it has been on the shelf.
