You have to be very careful buying a compressed gas tank used. Many times they are leased rather than owned and when you try to get them filled, they confiscate it and you have to either pay to lease it or loose it.
For that price, I would rather just go pay the difference and buy new from the local welding supplier. I think that price is pretty close to what your LWS would sell you one for.

Call your local welding supply and see what they charge for same tank. If you do buy it the "new" date will be stamped into it near the top. Don't take someone's word it's been done recently.

According to my lws you can't buy anything larger then an 80cf now. Somthing to do with the DHS law in the early 2000's.
Many shops will "Sell" you one but it's actually a lifetime lease but isn't transferable.
The other option is find an old owned tank or one that is from a defunct company.
Luckily my lws guy is great and exchanged the last couple tanks I bought. They don't refill your owned tanks unless you ask, just exchange.
I don't go through enough gas at the moment to make the lease practical so I have a couple 80s for the welders and pickled up a couple 300s and a 125 used off CL for cheap.
Now I almost never need to get my gas refilled!

No idea, it's been a few years since I've been in the market for tanks. When I was looking I couldn't find anything over 80cf for sale new, the price of used owned tanks has gone up.
I remember looking it up when he told me about it, had to do with being able to track larger high pressure tanks.
Maybe it's a state/regional thing, can't remember the details of the regulations.

My LWS charges $250 to buy a 125cf tank. $175 is a good price.

Thanks for all the info. My LWS doesn't sell tanks, just lease at $95/year. They didn't try to discourage me at all.

As long as the tank can be legally owned, and doesn't belong to some supplier, and has a recent certification, then YES, that is a good deal and you should buy it.
