I was in Costco today, checking out PAR30 wet location bulbs.

The Luminus one I looked at is packaged promoting it as a 10 watt bulb.

The bulb is actually labeled 120VAC , 125mA. So it appears that here (Canada) these bulbs can be marketed based on the wattage the LED element itself consumes, vs. what the whole bulb uses.

I realize that in many residential settings, 10 watts vs. 15 watts is not the end of the world :)..... I just get irked when I see misleading advertising.... esp. when it is off by 50%.

P.S. - I do like and use LED lighting; I'd just prefer to see more accurate consumer labeling.

I agree. It such a hassle to scrutinize every product to see how misleading the marketing is.

Lights have gotten funny with how they use wattage. Usually they use it luminar rating.

But in the scheme of things, 5 watts doesn't matter.

Agreed, in the context of residential lighting.

Funny how auto manufacturers have been hit with big fines for fudging mpg #'s way less than that though.

Yeah, your car gets 20MPG when it is advertized to get 30MPG? Shouldn't be a problem for anyone.

I think looking at this with percentage is a bit misleading. The significance of 10 mpg is alot different then 5 watts.

What is consuming power other then the element in a light bulb?

We use 5w e12base torpedo , dimmable, led lamps where I work.

I see many packages show actual usage and also show a comparison to a tungsten element output/ consumption

Inside an LED bulb there is a power supply that drops the high-voltage AC down to current-regulated DC. One way to cut cost is to design a less efficient power supply.

3930dave answered your question.

And yup, power supply design makes a difference. Some bulbs were not meant to be dimmed, etc.
