Steve,

That is typical of all engineering when it comes to draining fluids. These people should be made to actually perform maintenance on a vehicle or whatever machine they are designing. No offence to any engineers that may be on the board /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif. Did you find any obvious problems when you got her tore down?

One of the things I skipped over was the compression test; it pegged a 375 psi gage in both cylinders and all the valves went up and down as I held my figure on each one. Attached is the photo with the story. Not good news, but at least we know what the problem is. The rod bearing is somewhat worn from the sharp edges and the front main bearing doesn't feel tight from the long broken section of crank flopping around. This would also account for the oil leakage out the front main seal. SteveV

Ouch, that's got to hurt the ole pocketbook /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Steve, any idea what caused it? I'd sure like to avoid something like that if I could.

Hope this story has a happy ending for you /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Steve,

Hate to hear that /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif. Do you have any tractor junk yards were you live? I am sure a new crank would not be cheap. Good luck and keep us posted on the progress.

To answer a couple of your questions, I got the machine with 440 showing on the hour meter 8 years ago. It was used for mowing and sidewalk snow at an apartment complex. Since the front tires were worn out from lack of front weight with a rear mount mower, that must be 1400 hrs and it now has 1900. The only tractor junkyard I know of is in Colebrook NH which is a good 6 hr drive from here. I think the crank was taken out by misfiring and the injector pump problem. Being kicked outside in the winter probably didn't help. SteveV

Thats a sad picture..kinda like no coffee in the morning.

There a New Holland dealer over in Loundon,NH and the last time I knew he had parts for smaller Ford tractors..located across from McDonalds.

Steve,

I have a friend that is in the tractor salvage business. I e-mailed him to see if he would know of a place to look. I'll let you know what I hear from him.

Steve,

I'm sorry to see the broken crank. I am glad, however, that you shared this saga with us. What are you going to do? Is it time for a new (or younger) machine?

Peter
