12 volts and a coathanger

I had a my coworker make this weld using a 12 volt machine and coat hangers. We had to put knots in the Romex to turn the heat down.

OK, I'm lost. I've heard of weldors using coathangers as filler with acetylene welding and I've heard of arc welding with 12 volt car batteries but, never with coat hangers. What's going on? Also, please answer the really big question. Where did your friend find a wire coathanger in this age of plastic?

Controlling the heat by tying knots in the. Lead(Romex) was the hard part. We are in an old building and found the coat hangers in the dressing room.

Was this 12volts DC from a battery? Or AC? We need more details.

never tried 12v.. have done 24 and 32v with real welding rods and jumper cables though...

Dan.. I'd have to guess he was using dc not ac. getting 12v ac would need a variac or step down transformer... and one capable of providing quite a bit of amperage.... sounds like 'battery' to me..
