When converting from 6 volt to 12 volt is it necessary to replace gauges with 12 volt gauges?
Thanks

your gauges left the factory as all mechanical. at best.. you have some lamp elements to replace.

when you change coltage check any gauge and dash and head lamps.

and get a new coil / coil / resistor combo appropriate to the type of 8n you have. obviously the charge system and battery are being updated.

key switch is fine.. starter and soelnoid are fine.. etc..

good grief. what a suggestion. :(

I wasn't suggesting that he had to use a voltage converter, I was suggesting that if he had electrical gauges, as opposed to mechanical gauges, it is an inexpensive option rather than buying new gauges.

So what's with the sad face? :(

it's a 45$ answer to a 10 cent question.

way to much wireing to get a dc to dc converter ... besides. just not many options you see for electronic gauges on these.

the temp gauges are bulb style.

the oil pressure gauge is bourdon style.

proofmeter is straight mechanicale / cable driven off the hydro pump nose.

etc.. etc...

No, you can buy a 2 amp Dc-Dc converter for $1.75. And it is 2 wires in and two wires out.

besides just not many options you see for electronic gauges on these.
The OP didn't say whether the gauges were original, nor specify mechanical or electrical

I agree, with mechanical gauges, he should just change the light bulbs. If the gauges were electrical, an small DC-DC buck converter is an inexpensive way to power them off a regulated 6 volts.

I would not call the voltage off a genny with a vibratingstyle mechanical regulator 'regulated 6v'

you will see large % excursions from 'regulated 6v'... if the gauge in question relied upon regulated 6v for accuracy.. you may see innaccuracy. if it did not care about the exact voltage.. like a sender and on / off lamp.. not a biggie... can't say that i see lots of 6v vintage electronic gauges in these machines....

in any case. it's a way, way moot point.
