I can now give you somewhat of an awnser on your time frame question from this info! If you look at the Popular Science rear-of-the-magazine advertisement I posted above you will see I added the "1980 Popular Science" wording to the picture I found. This PopSci article you found has a date of Sept-1978 on it, so we know Sept of 1978-80 for sure and probably more.
I add the info here you found in a graphic, condensed for future reference.

PS< A reminder if anyone reads this I am looking for an oil plug for fit this baby.
The thread size is smaller than 1/2" NPT and Larger than 3/8' NPT , the thread
pitch I can only guess is somewhere between the 3/8 and 1/2" as well, I do
not think it is a tapered thread.
The OD of the plug is almost 1" exactly(.98"), a hair under.
The OD of the O-Ring is .85"
The threads protrude below the bottom of the o-ring .24" but as long as I match the thread it matters not the length.

I bought one of those back in the 80's. It worked good but the manual oiler got tiring. I still have it somewhere.........

OK I think I figured out the oil plug. A 37* JIC fitting fits perfect thread wise, from a 1/2" gas flex. I went digging thru RUSSEL's parts and found a "Russell by Edelbrock 660283 Black -8 AN Straight Thread Plug" I do believe I can add
an O-Ring to that baby and have a forever plug, I ordered it, I will report when it arrives. I bet ya that lil plug killed many of those machines! There are only like 3-4 threads max in the body of the oil tank and it is plastic!

It cuts well, it is not a tree feller*, but it is absolutely dangerous that is for sure. It is light at 7 pounds and it will be absolutely beautiful for the lil' trim here and there at the log splitter as I said. I am sure I will find other uses for it thru the years as well.
*Do not get me wrong, it absolutely will drop trees, but I suspect the motor will overheat first. It is a winner in my book. I will find many a use for it. I filed up the chain and oiled it up and clean it up and laid the cord in the sun and massaged it back into as new condition and VIOLA, I am very pleased with it!
PS, it is so very very quiet. I call it my George Washington 21st Century Special .:laughing:

It is weird isnt it to just hear that chain rattleing along and no motor noise.. I have a little lithium battery powered trim chain saw. It is not aspeed demon as the chain runs much slower than a "real" chain saw, but it is convienant.
