The tachometer on my 1140 MASSEY FERGUSON quit working today. I disconnected both ends of the cable & it looked O.K. Has anyone had this problem or know what is causing the problem? The tractor is a 1991 model with 940 hours.
Thanks,
Billy

I had thisproblem on my 1250. I took apart the cluster and took out the tach. I then lubricated the back of the tach directly after the cable connection. works great now! hope this helps.

Hello.
I have the same problem. I have not had the time to look into it at all.
I would appreciate it if you let us know how you fixed it.
Thank you.

I know this is an old thread - but I was able to fix my tach pretty easily. It turns out the grease in the gear box turns into glue, and everything binds up. When that happens, the gear attached to the input breaks loose from the shaft, which spins inside it. I fixed it by pulling the gear off the shaft, Then I roughed up the areas where the two meet, both the shaft and the gear (I used a vice-grip to crudely knurl the shaft). Then I used some super-glue to re-attach the gear to the shaft and let it dry. Finally, I put it back together with some silicone grease (the clear stuff also called dialectric grease - not the nasty stuff used to coat the backs of brake pads). It's been working great for several months now. BTW - this is a technique used by owners of old MB and SAAB cars to fix their stuck VDO odometers.

Interesting that this thread popped back up. Just last night I pried off the rim of my original MF 135 proofmeter to see why it failed and was disconnected at some point in time before I bought it. I found the exact same results. I'm going to try some carb cleaner to disolve the hardened grease. I may even try to put the old mechanics in a new case. Thanks for reserecting this thread. I'm sure others have failed tachs.

You mentioned VDO odometers. I took a 1941 Studebaker gauge cluster and refitted it with VDO gauges so they would mate to all my modern engine sensors. This left the gauge cluster looking original. -robert
