Hello my name Paul, I live in the sacramento county in california. I'm 28 and live at my moms house taking care of her. She recently got sick and her body needs good food. So i am determined to start an organic veggy garden for her this year. I am wondering if you guys could help me out in this task..There is about a half acre plot i plan on doing it on with an old tractor from 19?? something that used to run but has been sitting for years... prolly 10 or more.. the tractor is old and is the type with crank shaft handle thing in the front. I'll take pictures of it tommorow morning and post em. Anyways i dont know jack about tractors or engines for that matter, but i need to get this field broke up to plants some veggies for my mom. If that means learning about tractors I am ready.

peace n thank you

If you do get the tractor running do you have any impliments to work the ground and what is your time worth. Your money may be better spent finding a trusted source for your vegies. Or you could hire the tillage done by someone else.

:welcome: to Paul

Our biggest help for you would be as DanD suggested....drop the idea of hand cranking on an old tractor that isn't your cup 'o tea anyway.

Mom prolly needs food now and there is plenty in the market place at much less cost than getting old farm equipment running.

Rent (or hire) a rototiller to turn up a garden plot and get it planted tomorrow, rather than weeks from tomorrow with the old tractor idea. While the garden grows, then mess with the old tractor.
But that said, the old tractor (waiting for pics) will need fuel, air, and a good spark to run. We can help you track those things down one by one when you are ready and we know what you have to work with.
In the meantime, plant the seeds.

Welcome to TBN.
Old tractors are a lot of fun (I restore them--Farmall Cub, Farmall Super A, Minneapolis Moline BF, Massey Ferguson 135, Oliver 60, and counting)--- as a hobby. But trying to get one running so you can use it in the field (as opposed to displaying it and/or driving it in parades) can be a real bear and expensive to boot. And if you're starting from scratch experience-wise, figure it'll take you the better part of a year to become proficient.

For a 1/2 acre garden, I'd check eBay and craigslist for a riding mower with a rototiller. Mine is an old 1970s Bolens GT1453 (a garden tractor with a 14 hp Tecumseh engine) with a 3-ft wide rototiller. Found it locally off craigslist for $600

Good luck
