I am looking for a small compact with 4wd and have been looking at the older Massey Ferguson's due to their reasonable prices and reliability. I am looking for a tractor that a FEL can be added to. I was wondering if anyone knew the model number changes for the 10 series (1010,1020,1030,1035,1040,1045) I am looking for something in the 1020 size and wanted to broaden my search to include the newer models but don't know the model#'s. Can anyone recomend another model that is similar to the 1020? Is the 1120, 1220, or the 1240 similar? Thanks for the help.

I can't answer your specific question, but can offer this- If you google any tractor, such as Massey Ferguson 1010 for example, you should be able to go into tractordata.com
I was doing this when I was considering used so that I could find out the specs on each used machine I was looking at. If you do this, you would also be able to compare the specs of the older models vs the newer ones. Mainly years built, engine and PTO HP.
What I would ask you is what will you be using the tractor for and do you have a firm budget? The new sub-compact units are pretty reasonably priced even with a FEL. I also think you may find only a few thousand dollar price difference between a decent used machine vs a bran new one.

One more thing, keep in mind I am new to tractors but in my mind, I would find a machine with a FEL on it already if you know you're gonna want one later. It may be difficult later to find the right FEL depending on your area and used equipment availabilty. Or also why spend the money later to put a new FEL on an old machine? May be better in the long run to just spend the dough now and get a tractor that already has the right FEL on it. Just my opinion-

You may want to goto your local MF dealer, and talk to the parts guy. Toyosha/Hinimoto went bankrupt years ago, and you will want to make sure that parts will be available for a few years yet. If you can find an 1100 or 1200 series have a look at them. They are built by Iseki, who started building for MF when Hinimoto went out of business!!
Also, like others have said, if you find one with a loader, and you may want one in the future, buy it. To add a loader later on will cost $4000 or more for a new one!!

Thanks for all the replies. I will be using the tractor primarily for mowing 3 of my 5 acres. Secondary uses will be using a FEL to create and groom an ATV track I am planning on setting up. I tried using a basic garden tractor but due to the steep inclines on my land (up to 30 deg) I almost flipped it and I had some other traction problems. I went to the JD dealer in my area for ideas and was shown the X series 4wd mowers which would handle the hills great but I can't see spending ten plus grand on just a mower. I am looking to spend between five to seven thousand. Did the older Massey's come with a FEL available from the factory or is it only an after market add on?

From what you say and your budget I'd also look at some of the older Fords too, like the 8n and 600 series. They were very easy to maintain, parts are 100% available and they will eat up 3 arces for lunch. I have a MF 1240 and its great, but harder to find, and since you're looking used why not broaden the search.

30 degrees is pretty steep and personally I'd feel unsafe on any tractor. Get one sideways and it'll most likely roll. Whatever you get for sure have a factory ROPS. Rollovers happen so quick you won't have time to get off and are often fatal. 4 wd is always better and if a loader is 100% needed you may have no choice but to get a newer tractor, also most all newer machines have ROPS. Hard decisions I know, balancing $$ and features, but look at it this way, $$ can always be replaced, if you roll a tractor and get hurt or worse, that can't be replaced. I'd bite the bullet and get what you really need. Good luck.
