Going to be in the market for a new 3/4 or 1 ton truck and curious about the new trucks with automatics. I have always ran standards from back in the early 80's. Thinking on this one an auto would be nice. Will be looking at all brands with gas engine and 4x4. Will be used for towing upto 10-12k several times a year.
What brands seem to have the better auto? The F-250's at work have held up good but really like the new chevy trucks. Have mainly had dodge diesels/standards.

I have a 03 Chevy with the DuraMax and Allison auto, love the tranny but not sure if you can get it in a gas engine. ON a side note my diesel is just shy of 100K and gets about 20MPG guys with the gas tell me they get about 16

If you mean a brand new (current model year) truck, I don't believe there are any manuals left. Ford got rid of it with the new SD model a couple years ago, and I believe they were the last holdout. I could be wrong and if so someone will be along to correct me shortly, but that was what I recalled.

Did not realize that. Have not been to a dealer yet, still trying to decide 1 ton or 3/4 ton. Will be new or a 1 or 2 yrs old/low miles. depending on deal i find.

Dodge still has the handshaker, but you loose almost 200 ft-lb of torque (Cummins) if you take it. With the way the new autos are, I would not touch a hand shaker.

I bought my first 1 ton in 1986. (a low mileage 1985 GMC) I've had one ever since.
Started out with GM/454/4 sp. ('85, '88, '92 w/5 sp)
Bought Ford/7.3 diesel/5 sp after that. ('93)
Then went with Ford/7.3/auto. ('96, '00, '02, '03) Still have the '03.
I bought these trucks for business use, and they usually had a trailer hooked to them.
Just my experience, but I only had transmission trouble with the '92 GMC and '93 Ford 5 speeds, and the '02 Ford automatic. The '92 tranny had to be rebuilt at 6000 miles, and was coming apart again at 10000. So, I traded it in on a Ford diesel. That '03 wouldn't hold a clutch. Clutch, pressure plate, and flywheel was replaced, under warranty, 4 times in 30,000 miles. The dealership owner actually talked me into trading it in on a new truck with the auto. Haven't bought a handshaker in a new 1 ton since. The '02 was a fluke. The transmission had a faulty electronic circuit board that shorted out with only about 9000 miles on it. Ford replaced the transmission and that fixed it. No more problems. The only reason it was traded for the '03 was that I wanted a brand new 7.3 before they were all gone. And, that's why I still have that '03. It's not for sale or trade either. ;) I have it and a '97 F-250 with the 7.3's and I plan to run them until they can't be patched up anymore. (and that should be a long time)

You could not give me a manual with the new autos. Best of the bunch in a gas truck is tge Ford Torque Shift hands down. In a diesel the Allison and Ford are tied. If Dodge would put the 4500 series asian tranny in the 3500 series they would have a winner.

Ford dumped sticks in 05 and GM in 07. Dodge still has them but at a penalizing hp/tq loss.

I have a 2010 F-350 dually flat bed with gas v10. I was always a diesel guy till this truck. I pull 11,800 with it 130 miles. My route of travel takes me through some good hills then down the thruway at 70 mph. The rear end has 4.10 gears. My trailer is tag a long, not goose neck. The truck does VERY well. Admittedly there is less torque then my previous diesels, but not enough to justify the cost of the diesel motor. You could probably pull 10-12k with an F-250 diesel and goose neck, but you stated a gasser. That and the dually has way better sway resistance. I hope this helps, if you need more info you can always PM me.

Automatics are fine. If'f you buying used and ever have a problem you can have a bullet proof tranny built by suncoast

GM stiffed me my making a Duramax that was an over heater ( known issue ) and they did NOTHING to correct it. Their answer was ALL GM's overheat going up a hill. Called the Corporate office AFTER I knew hundreds of people called to complain and they said " they have NEVER HEARD of the over heating issue. Liars.

That was in 2005 and 2005 and I will never give GM a dime of my money again. It was so bad creative individuals created a solution by rerouting the air into the engine compartment.
