You bet ... although I have to say that my understanding of it was the same as yours.

Makes me wonder whether it was what we thought it was (historically) ... and then was later changed to dumb it down for the average consumer ...

My understanding is that no oil below 15W is a real diesel oil. One can use 10W 5W 0W but these are not heavy duty diesel oils. That's what I've always heard. I'm not saying that it's right, so perhaps some of you may know different

check out , for instance, valvoline 5w40 premium blue full synthetic HEAVY DUTY diesel motor oil, sports a cummins rating among others.
