    Tires Satoh S470 Buck

Why upsize the front wheels if the two tractors use identical gear-sets? According to Mitsubishi tractor date, the standard turf front wheel/tire size for both tractors, the Beaver III S373D and the Buck S470D are exactly the same, that being 6-12. Also, according to their data, the rear...

    Tires Satoh S470 Buck

Can the 6-18 rear turf wheels/tires from a Buck (S470d) be used as substitutes for the 6-16 rear turf wheels/tires on Beaver III (S373d) with no problems of binding up? I am wondering why these two models did not originally have the same size rear tires when new?

    Toro Groundsmaster 52 brake issue

Good suggestion. No, no photos taken when I had it apart. Will take some when I pull it apart again in the next couple of days after mowing a couple of acres with the GM. My gut tells me the drum needs to be turned, then new shoes installed. Sanding the existing shoes may help some, too, and...

    Toro Groundsmaster 52 brake issue

Ruled that possibility out first. The 52 uses a heavy-weight sheathed cable to connect the bottom of the brake pedal to the brake shoe lever. A spring returns the pedal to it’s normal position when not being depressed. All of this is currently working fine, with the linkage cable having been...

    Toro Groundsmaster 52 brake issue

Something has changed with the left brake on my Toro Groundsmaster 52. The brakes on these units is an essential component to be used when making very sharp turns, either left or right. So, I had begun to notice this issue last year, but didn’t get around to looking into it. This cutting...

Groundsmaster 52 runs 10 minutes, then dies

I asked him about that again as well. He attributed it to possibly being the new points not being properly adjusted. Certainly possible. As for the coil being not faulty and the problem having been something else….I am inclined to say the problem was a faulty coil from the outset of the...

    yes, new points and condenser.

Groundsmaster 52 runs 10 minutes, then dies

He didn’t say he tested it, but through the process of elimination (didn’t run correctly with old coil, but did once new coil was installed) arrived at the conclusion it was faulty. All other components in the ignition system were tested or replaced prior to the coil, which was left until last...

Groundsmaster 52 runs 10 minutes, then dies

Richard, glad you mentioned that, about whether or not he charged for his education. No, he did not charge one cent for that portion. Only for his labor of 3 hours for everything. I furnished the parts. I felt that more than reasonable, and tipped him well for his dedication to getting the...

Groundsmaster 52 runs 10 minutes, then dies

After nearly 3 months in the shop, the GM 52 is out and runs like new again. It the coil after all. It took the small engine mechanic quite a bit of time, as he was unfamiliar with old Briggs L head engines and had to learn while delving into this one. When I brought the GM 52 to him, I also...

Groundsmaster 52 runs 10 minutes, then dies

Here’s the latest update. This afternoon, I tried starting the engine dead cold. It started, but not after I had flooded it. With the new carb kit and the new fuel pump having far more pumping ability than the original pump, I will need to learn how to start it again, like a new-to-me outfit...

Groundsmaster 52 runs 10 minutes, then dies

MossRoad, thanks for reminding me to proofread! Must have hit the “1” and ”2” at the same time maybe? It should have been only “1” pint, not 12 pints. LOL! Stevem5215, no I did the compression tests while it was cold, the same time as I did another spark test. The spark test showed weak spark...

Groundsmaster 52 runs 10 minutes, then dies

Have the appointment to bring the GM 52 in to a nearby small engine shop tomorrow, where they will check the coil as well as any other suspect components. If a major OH is needed, they could do that, but of course weren’t high on making the recommendation due to cost. (I totally understand, but...

Groundsmaster 52 runs 10 minutes, then dies

Here’s the latest: The latest carb kit arrived yesterday, so today was the day to put it in. As mentioned earlier, I had pulled the carb off already and cleaned it up as best I could, but still no change in the engine stalling out after a few minutes. Today, when pulling the carb off, I took...

Yes, Jaxs absolutely did as well. I hadn‘t overlooked his recommendation, having put a bookmark on it to refer back once the system is ready to put back into place. The carb remains the first suspect, with fuel pump and lines second. Carb kit should be on the doorstep tomorrow, put into the...

Groundsmaster 52 runs 10 minutes, then dies

This is written in the original service manual for Groundsmaster 52. There wasn’t oil in the pulse line before putting on the new fuel pump, but I didn’t observe any smoking before the new fuel pump was installed either. Will check it again, as the new replacement fuel pump is purported to...

Groundsmaster 52 runs 10 minutes, then dies

I paid $35 including postage for an OEM Briggs. I didn’t check on a new carb for it, as I have gone that route before for some much smaller engines and found the quality was unpredictable. Sometimes good, sometimes not. This carb is made to be rebuilt, so thought it best to go with the known...

Groundsmaster 52 runs 10 minutes, then dies

The problem arose suddenly. No advance warning. Unless the seat is pot metal gray, the usual brass screw-in seat wasn’t there. I looked specifically for it and wondered at the time I had it apart about why there wasn’t any. Well, it’s coming apart again in a few days when the kit arrives...

Groundsmaster 52 runs 10 minutes, then dies

On the Groundsmaster 52, the pulse line is looped around the dipstick tube. This is how it is supposed to be positioned. Evidently the pulse vacuum is unaffected by any accumulation of oil in the loop.

Groundsmaster 52 runs 10 minutes, then dies

By “pickup” line, are you referring to the line from the tank to the fuel filter, or the line between the filter and the carburetor? I have already replaced them both with new on the GM after flushing out the tank with a high pressure washer for several minutes. As for the bug…it served as a...

Groundsmaster 52 runs 10 minutes, then dies

Yes, the problem now exists with fresh non-oxygenated gasoline. If I was a betting person, I would place my money on the problem being inside the carburetor somewhere. I have considerable experience with Kohler engine carbs, but not much with those used by Briggs. So, I can’t say one way or...

Groundsmaster 52 runs 10 minutes, then dies

Sounds like something on a later Briggs. My Groundsmaster 52 was made in 1980, when flathead (L-head) engines were the norm for lawn mowers and garden tractors. Was the engine you just fixed an OHV engine?

Groundsmaster 52 runs 10 minutes, then dies

Don’t know why I didn’t think to mention this before, but you are correct….throttling it down and it purrs like a kitten for as long as I want it to. Throttle it up and it runs rough, seems starved. No backfiring. This is consistent with wife’s observation that if she stopped forward motion...

I have just ordered a new OEM Briggs carb kit to be installed in a few days once it arrives. In the meantime, I do appreciate the many good suggestions for what is going on with this old B&S 16 hp L head cast iron engine, horizontal shaft. It’s true monster of an engine, but has tons of...

Well, some new information discovered this PM. As mentioned above, yesterday wife was out mowing and came back reporting it didn’t totally die as it would before. Considering this some improvement, I then switched out the E10 for some non-oxygenated fuel. Let stand overnight, then today went...

Groundsmaster 52 runs 10 minutes, then dies

Have had the carb apart once and inspected the needle/seat at the time, then blew it out with an air jet. So, for any larger particles, pretty sure it is now free of any that may have been in it. But, as far as varnish is concerned, I didn’t spray any carb cleaner at the time, because I didn’t...

Groundsmaster 52 runs 10 minutes, then dies

The lines were all replaced with new, with the exception of the rubber hose which exits the tank near the top and ends open to the atmosphere beneath the tractor, the purpose of which I assumed to be an overflow or for internal pressure relief. Would it not serve the same purpose as a vented...

Groundsmaster 52 runs 10 minutes, then dies

Although I have drained the fuel tank twice, the fuel that I put back in was E10 regular. I am assuming there is no water in it, but to double check that, I’ll drain it one more time, then replace with non-oxygenated regular 91 octane, the recommended modern fuel for old engines. It’s a long...

Tractor is a Toro Groundsmaster 52 with 16HP Briggs L head cast iron engine, 32000 series. Manufactured back in 1980. The problem is, it runs and cuts fine for approximately ten minutes, then dies. I can interrupt the dying by choking the engine and it comes back to life. But, only for a few...
