Grease - is there no better way? Can we talk about this?

Regular maintenance, greasing, changing oil, and checking air pressure in tires is the life of a machine. The electric grease gun is easier for me. One hand to hold the long hose on the zerk, the other to pull the trigger. Some of my equipment have zerks you can see but are hard to reach and...

Grease - is there no better way? Can we talk about this?

Too much grease is messy, but the worst thing is you can damage or even push a grease seal out. The fitting should always be wiped clean before greasing. Dirt on the fitting can be pumped into what you are greasing and damage a bearing.

Buying an excavator with resale in mind

I didn't say skid steer, I said track loader. Cat 963, Dresser 125, John Deere 650. These are not skid steers. These machines have steel tracks and are excavation machines. They're small, 18 to 24 thousand pounds but with the right operator will bury comparable size track hoes.

Buying an excavator with resale in mind

Unless you are just sold on a small track hoe, I would seriously consider a small track loader. With a 4 in 1 bucket it will do anything a track hoe will do and more. The only thing it won't do is dig a narrow ditch because the bucket will be wider than one on a small track hoe. Try to level...

Tractor for land clearing and preparation

If you have 100+ acres of 1 to 2 inch saplings, you need a 75 to 80hp tractor and 15' bush hog. Anything bigger, I would suggest a track loader with 4 in1 bucket. Preferably a dresser 175c. A track loader with a 4 in 1 bucket is much more versitle than a dozer. Dozers push and that's it. A...

    Gooseneck or bumper pull?

Which trailer is better is like asking how long is a rope. Too many variables for a "right" answer. Depends on the load being pulled, what you are pulling with. Lots of loads can be pulled with a light truck but the real issue is can the truck handle the weight. Most people overlook being...

Looking to buy my first tractor

You have 20 acres, downed trees, and heavy lifting to do. Buy a small to mid-size tractor and equipment mentioned and in five years you will still have 20 acres, downed trees and heavy lifting to do. I would buy a dresser/international 150 or 175 track loader with 4 in 1 bucket. 10,000 to...

    Eradicating rocks before tilling

Deer don't mind the rocks. I wouldn't want my tiller in a bunch of rocks big or small. I would use a small pick up type disc or small chisel plow to scratch the surface and plant your plot. Drag a small cedar tree or something to lightly cover the seed and go clean your gun.

    Dealer backing out of deal

You are over the proverbial barrel on that deal. Go get your deposit and find another dealership and see what you can do there for the same equipment. Honest mistakes are made.

Learning how to drive with a trailer..

A single axle trailer is much more difficult to back, it responds to turning much quicker than multi-axle trailers. Four simple rules to learning to pull a trailer. 1st keep it behind you, 2nd, 3rd, 4th practice, practice, practice.

    Barndominium/Shop or "real" House?

A friend of mine has done exactly what you are contemplating. Worked fine for the until "Mom" at 90 years old needed a place to live or go into a facility. Master bedroom and bath down stairs, 3 other rooms and bath upstairs. Didn't work out too well. Stairs in a residence is kind of like...

What size earth auger bit do you use for a 4x4 fence post?

The hole needs to be big enough to allow at least 2" of packing material on each side of your post. Concrete around any treated wood will void the warranty on treated lumber. The ash in the concrete will rot the wood in a few years. People do it every day but read the warranty on your treated...

    Dump Truck recommendation

A "real" dump truck is going to be too high off the ground to load and haul a tractor routinely. The tailgate opens from the bottom not the top. Ramps would need to be steel and 10' long minimum. Consider a retired grain/silage truck with a steel floor. Most of them have a dump system, flat...

    Disking up an old field

This response is to Stephen D. Are you being sarcastic or just plain stupid? Man asks a question for help or advice and you but in with that s__t. Any farm kid knows if you leave a pile of crap alone it won't stink long but keep stirring it up and it will stink from now on. Leave it alone.

    Disking up an old field

By the time you buy a breaking plow, a disc, fuel, fix your break downs for a one time use: Hire it done. Pick up the rocks and plant your grass. Been there, done that.

150 years worth of Gopher mounds

Are you sure you got gophers and not fire ants. Fire ants usually run the gophers and everything else off. I have used a 3 point chisel plow set just low enough to catch the mounds but not the actual level of the field. That breaks up the mounds or piles and then come back with a heavy drag...

Hey ksbrdmkr, I had a homelite 360 my dad bought in 1965 when I was a kid at home. Good saw at the time. First auto oiler I ever saw, state of the art. Used a long time. Traded it in on the husqvarna 266 se in 1984. Husqvarna is or was made by Electrolux Corp that also made jonsred and...

Chainsaws are like everything else in this world. You get what you pay for, some of the time. Everyone has their favorites in everything be it Ford, Chevrolet, Pepsi, or Coke. I have a Husqvarna 266 SE bought new in 1984. The only reason I remember the date is that it is in the serial...

    Another backhoe question

Apparently my last post didn't post. A Dresser/International 175c is not a mini excavator. It weighs about 34,000 lbs. It's like a bulldozer with a bucket instead of a blade. There are plus's and minus's with a machine like this instead of a toy. Moving it from one location to another...

My suggestion to buy a used track loader is by no means a mini excavator. A Dresser 175c weighs in at about 34,000 lbs. and over 100hp. This is a machine you can work with. In comparison to a backhoe attachment, the bh is a toy. Lots of luck!

    Another backhoe question

If you have clearing and digging to do, consider a dresser/international track loader with 4 in1 bucket. The 150 or better yet 175c will do about anything you need to do within reason. 10 to15 grand for a decent one, about half of a comparable Cat machine. If you don't tear it up, you can...
