Problem is that reducing human population is a huge problem.
Especially for those being reduced.

Having children later in life is a simple way to slow the cycle…

Problem is children are now encouraged reasoning who will carry on to support the elderly if workforce dwindles?

Another World War would fix that problem. Or just eliminate India and China from the count. That's about 35% right there.

What might mean more in statistics is population density. The US is among the lower 10% so it's not us polluting the world.
Looking at pollution per capita, the US ranks right up there towards the top.

Human population growth is already slowing, and in many countries (see Europe) it appears decline over the next 20 - 50 years is nearly innevitable. Even China's population has dropped over the last 4 years, sort of ironic since that came after cancellation of their 1980's - 2000's "one-child" policies.

People are getting married and having kids later or less, all over the world. Even just delaying child rearing from age 25 to age 35 has a huge effect on how many children are born to a given population per century (e.g. 4 generations vs. 3 generations per century). If the delay in child rearing is greater than the average extension of life, then the population will decline.

"per capita" may not be a fair way to look at this, given we also lead in every other measure, from manufacturing through consumption. "Per GDP" might be a better metric, as those just subsisting in a village in a 3rd world country are obviously producing less in every way, from pollution through productive goods.

Put otherwise: Those who do the most will always have the greatest impact on their surroundings.

We're headed for population collapse. Adding to the problem is that, in general, the people most capable are having fewer children and the least capable have more.

When I say capable, I mean of supporting the children and of passing along intelligence and such. Humans are one of the only species who have stopped with survival of the fittest.

I found out yesterday that my Dr. has 14 kids, though! Bucking that trend.

I know many nurses from very large families but the nurses themselves have one or maybe two and often closer to age 30 than 20.

I don't think this is anything new.

Humans are one of the only species who have stopped with survival of the fittest.
True, if you consider "the fittest" by obsolete standards. The reality is that technology has eliminated many of the obstacles that would have once made a mate less attractive or viable. But that's the world we live in, so why continue judging "the fittest" by an outdated standard?

I'm always reminded of one Amish father, interviewed near here about 30 years ago, when the state was battling with the Amish over pulling kids out of school after 8th grade. The state was claiming, "you're not preparing kids for life in our modern world." The Amish father's response was, "that's right, we are preparing them for life in our world."

Or put otherwise, ugly folk with a limp and asthma wanna get laid, too!
