I am helping my son in law clear out a thicket around a pond. This tree has given us a lot of trouble. There are many trunks growing out of the 6 to 10 foot diameter base. First picture. Limbs grow out and send other limbs straight up or down to the ground where they root. And another tree starts interconnecting to the first. Second picture. Limbs, both large and small, have thorns on them. Third picture. First trunk I cut Sunday afternoon left a two inch gash on top of my head. Still haven’t figured out how it got me. Anyway, does anybody know what this evil monster is.

Wouldn’t let me post multiple photos from phone. Second and third will be in comments.

Yep. That's a bois d' arc tree (locally pronounced "bowdark").
Can be killer on your chain saw. Slow to rot. A lot of old houses
used bois d' arc stumps as piers. Osage Orange, Horse Apple etc
Goes by different names depending on what area you're from.

Still couldn't get the second and third pictures to post. Oh well.

Yeah, it could be a chainsaw killer. I got the bar pinched more times in four hours cutting that thing than I have since the saw was bought ten+ years ago. Still nursing the cut on top of my head from a limb/thorn. But we cut enough down that the son in law will be busy cutting it up for the burn pile for a month. And I'm glad to hear that it burns well.

It burns very HOT. If you burn it in a stove, you should mix it with other wood and burn small amounts at a time.

Finally got the second and third pictures to post. The entire tree with its offshoots covers an area about 30x30 yards. Everything in the first picture here is connected to the main trunk. Even the cut off log is still connected by a root running on top of the ground. In the second picture you can see the thorns on a limb growing from the base of the trunk. Don't know how we are going to destroy this thing without a dozer, dynamite, or napalm.
