Does any one strain their diesel fuel through a funnel with a good screen. For years I just poured my fuel in from a jug. But a few years ago I got a different tractor and I use a funnel to keep from spilling it. I notice after about 10 gal I have to clean the strainer out. It's not from dirt in my jug and purchase diesel at different places. Looks almost powder when dried. (I put my funnel in a storage bucket when done also)

Yes I do. Use a Mr. Funnel on tractor and on the mowers. Can't say that I have seen anything that looks like powder. Have caught a dead wasp and a couple of spiders before. Not sure how they got in can as caps always on can

Wonder if it may be desiccated diesel bugs that may have been killed at the source of the fuel at one time?

I have this in my tractors fill neck. It helps catch stray bugs and whatever.
My fuel goes through a 10 micron filter water separator then a 2 micron final filter from my bulk tank. Cant be too clean.

I've gone to 2 100 gal tanks with 12V pumps, each with built-in filter cartridges. I can't lift the 5 gallon containers comfortably any more. Last time I did it, the plastic filler neck came off and fell into the tank. Fished for an hour to get it out. I can fork the tanks onto a small trailer and then get tax exempt off-road diesel. When 1 tank gets used up, I switch to the other and soon head to town for a refill. Only foreseeable problem is not using that much fuel per year. I have a haying tractor and 2 lawn mowers that use diesel. Power Service used in both tanks hoping to keep it viable. I just bought a used-oil furnace that can help consume it in the machine-shed if it's needed.

I've never seen white powdery residue in my strainer. I use a MrFunnel for known contaminated or suspect fuel on rare occasion, and plan on getting one of the metal strainers for the filler neck like posted above.
My bulk tank has a 17u filler / water separator bowl, followed by a 2u final filter. I replaced the strainer / separator on my tractor with a Racor 2u filter / water separator.

Nah. Mine quit straining when I turned the fuel up a bit

My diesel is filtered twice. First using a 10 micron filter on my bulk tank, which I use to fill a portable tank. That one is equipped with another 10 micro filter and used to fuel my diesel equipment.

If it were me, I'd spend some time tracking down the origin of the powder. I'd start by cleaning my transport container, and then buying from one station for a while. Once you get it sorted out, I'd have a good look in the tractor's fuel tank, and perhaps clean that as well, and then I'd change the fuel filter on the tractor.

Diesel will corrode galvanized coatings, and the result is a whitish powder of zinc oxide.

Personally, I only buy diesel from high volume, top two brand petroleum companies. The downside to bad diesel is expensive. BTDT, and I'm not doing it again if I can help it.

All the best,

Peter
