Ford flail mower 917 advice

FYI 917 (Bush Hog FH174 or FH188 also) the skid shoes that go on either side are no longer available.

Here is a drawing of them.

They come from the factory with 5/16” plow bolts. However I couldn’t get any, so I used a 3/8” flat head cap screw/bolt.

I used 1.5”x.25 strap steel 36” long to make replacement skids.

Bush Hog said they made the 917 for Ford.

Thanks for sharing the skid drawing. The old skids can be used as a pattern, but this is great. And, as you show, it is not critical to use plow bolts as the bolt is just holding the skid in place. At one point, when I could get the skids for a decent price from Flail Master, I used carriage bolts, heated the head and pounded the head flat.

I called Flailmaster first to get the skids and they said they no longer have them. I don’t doubt the demand for them is low likely very low.

Right, like I said in an earlier post, they no longer sell them and yes, low demand most likely. Thanks for sharing the drawing.

When I make up a set, I will go with thicker material.
