Check that fuseable link that connects to the bus bar. Mine was going bad and I was having the same issues with starting.

There is a fuseable link that is attached to the glow plug bar, mine was on the first plug. Mine had intermittent power to the bar. There is a tab to unlock it and it wouldn't come off. Really! That can't be "massaged" back into place with a sledge hammer.... ;) I would ask him to pay for the repair or a new one, family or not. +1 on a metal fab/shop, any good place should be able to get it back in shape, but check pricing either way

Has it been progressively getting harder to start? I have a 1526 and it was the fuseable link that connects to the glow plug bar, giving power sometimes, you could see it was starting to melt a bit. My testing showed 12 volts on the bar. Replaced the fuseable link and she fired right up. Not...

That's where my problem was. That's a fuseable link, mine was slightly melted and sometimes I would get power on the bar. Went and picked one up a NAPA for $8 and she fired right up. I was thinking about not getting one, but it's a fuseable link for a reason....

Just had the same issue. The start up was blowing a little white smoke and progressively got worse to where it wouldn't start and just blow white smoke. Took the test light to the first plug and would the light to come on sometimes, put the test light to the wire that connects to the first glow...
