Local TV station has a live cam on an osprey nest on top of their microwave tower.
Saw them bring up a large goldfish last year.

Our small vernal pool was skimmed over with morning ice but we could still clearly see the spotted salamander egg mass suspended above the bottom with the aid of a stick.

Heard my first tree frog of the season last night.

I've never had any interest in birds but last week I was sitting on the front porch and got curious about what I was hearing so I downloaded the Merlin app which identifies birds by their calls. Yesterday I got really frustrated because the "bird" call was super loud and really nearby but the app couldn't identify it. I finally figured out it was a frog.

I grew up in country with a 2 acre lake and had all sorts of frogs. Here we're between two ponds and 45 years ago it was too quiet in Springtime, no peepers. My wife and I were at a lake walking around when we saw hundreds of small baby ones so I got a large drink cup, filled it and that evening sneaked down over the hill letting them go in a neighbor's lake.
We love the sound and it puts us to sleep with the window open at night.
About a week later that neighbor stopped by for a visit. He looked haggered. "Do you hear them at night???" he asked.
"What's that?" I replied.
"THOSE GODDAM FROGS! WE CAN'T SLEEP! WE CAN'T FIGURE OUT WHERE THEY CAME FROM BUT HAVEN'T SLEPT A WINK ALL WEEK!"
We love the sound and it puts us to sleep with the window open at night.

That's my favorite time of night to swim. When the sun is down, the western sky is still blue, but the eastern sky is black and some stars are out. Nothing better.

A few pictures here and yesterday's funny story. I drove all the way over to my homeplace and noticed an antique cast iron birdhouse on the lamp post so I brought it home after looking inside, it was empty.
The top had three brass screws to get it apart and that was a major job but got the top off.
Inside was a nest with three tiny birds!
I thought now I'll have to feed them with an eyedropper and...the heck with it!
I put new screws in it and said to wife we'll have to go back!
So we did.
Back home I put it back & waited in car parked away & within a few minutes the parents returned. Chickadees.
All was well. I'm sure for over an hour the parents wondered what happened.
