My Grandfather spotted a Purple Gallinule at his lake near Lynchburg Virginia in about 1965 and contacted the local newspaper.
They're pretty rare I assume.
That's a great picture of one.

OK, that looks like a guy licking a soft shell turtle's left front leg while standing on the lunar surface. Maybe it's karaoke night? Maybe it's a crab with flat feet. What the heck is it?

Crab grabbed the idiot's tongue

Kind of late to still be setting on eggs, but the 2 other nests that I'm aware of in our area were compromised by the harsh spring and mom and dad are long gone. It appears mom has a nice fat rat for lunch, yum! Probably my last photo, in another week leaf cover will obscure my view.

The gas tank...I'm trying to figure it out.

Topo map of the area I'm riding. Some of the areas, like SB Point, are extremely remote with only rough trails leading to them. Nearest pavement is probably 70 miles. So I carry two GPS units (each displaying different information) and I tape a map to the gas tank to give me an overall view of the area. Depending on the area I also make up a large topo map, roll it up, and fasten it to the handlebars in case its needed. There are NO road signs of any sort, just primitive roads/trails going in all directions, so you are on your own as far as getting around. I've spent a week out there riding around and never met another person or another vehicle.

On one of my trips to the area I lucked out and met a National Park Service Ranger - riding a Honda dirt bike. That was his patrol vehicle - trails he had to patrol just took too long on anything with 4 wheels. I rode with him all day. Here's a pic of his Honda - the two thingies above the headlight are red/blue strobe lights - same as any other law enforcement vehicle would have.

Incredibly rugged country...easy to get lost, easy to end up in terrain you just can't cross.
