Problem: Kohler engine SV590S 19hp.( 2009 vintage)---Leaking gas from fuel solenoid. Old solenoid has single red wire connected directly to the bottom of the solenoid---new solenoid has 2 wire plug-in harness (RED & BLACK WIRES). Looking at the male end of the new harness, one end is ovel and one end is square meaning it is orientated to fit the female port in the solenoid. Unfortunately, the male port on the solenoid has both square ends meaning the harness will fit either way. I assume the red wire is hot and the black wire is ground. What happens if I get the orientation wrong when I plug the harness into the solenoid?
HELP
Thanks, FRDDOCAR

Many of the old solenoids grounded through the body, hence only a positive wire going to it. Problem was when corrosion built up where the solenoid contacted the mounting surface, you lost the ground and the solenoid quit working. Newer solenoids have a dedicated ground wire to alleviate that problem.

You might try to ask your local Rehilko (Kohler) repair shop or use this website.

Thanks WM75Guy:
That's exactly what happened. The old removeable solenoid had a green wire attached to the body of the carb. grounded to the tractor frame and a single red wire plugged into the tractor wire harness. The new solenoid has a 2 pin wire receptacle that accepts a plug-in 2 wire harness. Unfortunately, the male wire harness plug doesn't fit into the wire receptacle without filing off the plastic locking clips plus there is no orientation as it will fit either way into the receptacle. The question is which pin is hot in the solenoid receptacle.
Thanks for your response,
Fred

The old solenoid did not have a internal suppression diode inside so it just grounded to carb body. The new one does have a diode so has separate grounding. Red is positive and black is to ground on these.

Thanks for responding. I held off inserting the wire harness into the solenoid receptacle because the locking clips would have made it nearly impossible to remove if I had the wires reversed. After I read your quote, I tried to make the connection and the 2 locking clips hit on the edge of the receptacle and that's as far as it would go. I filed off the 2 clips and made the connection. I tested the solenoid by doing the plus red/ black minus on a 12 volt battery. Low and behold the piston retracted. After the weather warms up (now+15 degrees in my garage) I'll put it all together and see if it starts. THANKS AGAIN! Fred
