DEF for new truck

That is a very interesting observation considering the cost to fix or straighten out a DEF system problem.

In addition to the stupidity of offering DEF, but not near the diesel fuel pump, my on-going aggravation is the new marketing strategy of gas stations with mini-marts. The industry trend is to slow the pump speed down to lengthen the time to refill. The theory is while you are waiting and waiting you will walk in and buy a soda or bag of chips for some extra $$$.

I was at my regular diesel station that underwent the change. But I didn't realize it yet. There was a line of vehicles waiting to refuel and I thought WTF. Seemed I waited forever. When I finally worked my way up to the pump, I found the pumps had been slowed to 2 gals/minute. I needed about 60 gals, which would have taken 30 minutes to pump. Screw that.

So I bought 10 gals and went to a different station. I've never gone back. And I didn't buy any chips or soda ....
Usually slow running pumps are caused by fuel filters on the pumps getting restricted. I have not had a problem.

I do so few miles that it doesn't matter how much the DEF costs. But if I did high miles, I'd make it a point to swing past a wally world or something only if I was going in that direction.

I always buy DEF at the pump. It's usually cheaper than the jugs. The only time I ever bought a jug was a couple weeks ago when it was really cold - all the DEF pumps were frozen and I was near empty. A jug at the gas station cost me $18. At the pump it's under $4/gal. To whoever said heat makes DEF go bad; you do realize that the DEF in your tank is heated, right? Where I live the diesel pumps are fast so long as you get the ones with the large diameter nozzle tubes. The smaller car-sized nozzles can be slower.

My new truck ( Ram 3500 ) is diesel. So - DEF is also in the picture. However - there is SUCH a wide range of prices between different brands. Examples ...... Kleen DEF - $56/ 2.5 gal. Blue DEF - $17/ 2.5 gal. For those of you, in the know. Is this price difference justified?
The savings in DEF, maint. and fuel has paid for the delete. Did it and haven’t looked back.

I buy the OEM ACDelco 2 1/2 gallon jugs of DEF at my local GMC dealer for both my diesel vehicles. Last time I bought the prices was $16.99, cheaper than any local parts house. Plus, I get reward points for purchasing from the GMC dealer, good towards service or parts purchases. When I had a DEF sensor go bad on one of my vehicles there wasn't any question getting it replaced under warranty.

right, where you are. Locally, def is $4.95/gallon at the pump. 55 gal barrels from my local supplier are $165

Any truck stop has DEF pumps and it's SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper.

I am fairly certain the 26 HD Rams have that 10 yr old/ 100k power train warranty already
But not the base torque bump up to 1,075ft lbs.
I’ll wait till ‘27’s come out for that.

How’s that gonna work out in reality when the tranny (ZF 8AP1075) is rated the same? If the power train warranty covers it, sitting in the shop still gets 0 done. I know the horror stories abound, waiting on parts and/or service has gotten to be the norm. One of my guys waited just over 6 months to get his 5500 back when the cp4 pump fragged itself. Another one had his sit for 4 months waiting on a tranny. I had a 2 week wait for the cp4 upgrade after they got the parts. Their excuse was they only had one lift big enough

I don’t have the answers for everything, but if I have a 10/100K, I’m feeling a little better than driving a truck with ZERO warranty and a lot of heavy towing miles on its’ transmission.

“IF” being the key word. It doesn’t always work out to be a problem either. Sometimes things get fixed quickly and you’re back up & running.

Mine didn’t frag, but the entire system was replaced in ONE DAY. 6 months? Your guy’s dealer or shop is a joke.

What’s your answer? Never buy a new truck? 🤷‍♂️
That’s actually a somewhat viable strategy, but my accountant wants depreciated equipment and trucks cycled through and I don’t see a better time to get more for my 2020 and get into a quickly depreciated new truck.

I’ll wait.

I put one of those 2.5 gallon jugs in my 2500 in Dec (some time) still over 1/3. I won't add till under a quarter of a tank.
Keep in mind that the gauge isn't linear on a Ram. Mine doesn't start moving until at about 1/2 tank, and then goes down fairly quickly from there. Of course, I'm averaging around 300-350 mpg on DEF.

But keeping the tank level low can really pay off in the winter. We had a Ram 3500 that had sat for months, so the DEF was surely a large frozen chunk by then. More than the tiny heater in there could deal with.

Thought I'd be towing that one back home, but my girlfriend managed to make it back. Once the weather warmed up it was good to go again.

Have put two year old DEF in mine (well, it spent two years in the garage, don't know how old it was when purchased) without any issues.

Not every truck stop, I paid $35 for a box of def at a station in Billings, Montana, I use the Mudflap app so I was filling up where the semi’s fill up, but there was no def at those pumps

I hear a lot about the flex nozzle. If I have any troubles - I'll get the special DEF funnel and just pour straight out of the jug.

The jug and the nozzle work very well, at least on the Blue DEF I have been buying. Leave the jug in the box. Pull the nozzle out all the way (it accordions out to like 18" or 2'). Stick it in the filler and upend the jug. The rubber one way valve will let air in so it drains fast. Not a drop spilled.

The first time I filled up I took the jug out and it took forever. The jug is so thin that it flexes as you hold it and the valve doesn't open. Leaving it in the box helps that.

It's actually a neat bit of engineering.

I go to a Fuel Station that offers pump DEF. It's way cheaper, and way easier.

They do-even though the window stickers still show the old 5 year info.

Just signed on a 26 3500 Laramie Night Edition and had that discussion at the dealer yesterday.
I thought the all Ram HD diesels were 1075 ft pounds of torque except for the cab and chassis trucks.
