So just to bring this convo back to reality, a small diesel truck probably won’t use more than 5 gallons of DEF per month for normal driving, even with some towing.
So what you pay for DEF will be much smaller than what you pay for fuel.
Probably less than what the average owner spends on coffee.
I put one of those 2.5 gallon jugs in my 2500 in Dec (some time) still over 1/3. I won't add till under a quarter of a tank.

I’ve put $70 of def in my truck since I bought it. Google says the standard DEF usage is 2 percent the amount of fuel.

That doesn’t mean much in quantity though. I paid $34 for a 2-1/2 gallon box in Montana when it wasn’t available at the pumps.

As for DEF, I have a gripe with Air1 brand. Their jugs are garbage. The funnels rarely screw on properly and often are missing the little black rubber breather, so you end up spilling DEF all over.
To me, the funniest thing about DEF is that the jugs are not recyclable.

Well ... I reuse them!

I cut part of the top off so I can fill them easier with water, and set them next to my saplings, after I drill a 1/4" hole in the bottom ... I'd have to look, but I think the second style are recyclable ...

The above square ones only last about 1.5 years out in the sun, then they get brittle and crack, the rectangle type below are holding up much better ...

If yu just drive around empty it’ll consume way less than if you tow heavy.

In my RV I use the cheap stuff from Walmart. I don't use enough of it that the price versus pump DEF matters and DEF pumps are absolutely disgusting. To make matters worse my DEF tank is about 12 feet behind my diesel fill so I need to pull forward after fueling to use the DEF nozzle. I use the Walmart jugs with a cheap stick style transfer pump.

Yes, they are. However, if you are a LD trucker at truck stops, you don’t have much choice.
I prefer to buy the DEF in sealed containers because just a little dirt in the DEF system can cause problems.

I bought two jugs DEF at the local auto store. Keep them in my spare bedroom. Out of the sun and a constant 52 degree F. I hear a lot about the flex nozzle. If I have any troubles - I'll get the special DEF funnel and just pour straight out of the jug.

Service tech for Ram said - around 300 miles per gallon for DEF in this new truck. I'll also check to see if the big truck stops have DEF pumps.

Yes - I truly loved the Power Wagon ( Taco Wagon ). But it developed MULTIPLE electronic problems. Ram told me they were unable to solve these problem with a permanent cure.

I guess we typically get fuel at Kwik Trip and they pride themselves on cleanliness so I’ve never seen a dirty def pump or diesel pump other than the cement pad where people spill some diesel or def

That is a very interesting observation considering the cost to fix or straighten out a DEF system problem.

In addition to the stupidity of offering DEF, but not near the diesel fuel pump, my on-going aggravation is the new marketing strategy of gas stations with mini-marts. The industry trend is to slow the pump speed down to lengthen the time to refill. The theory is while you are waiting and waiting you will walk in and buy a soda or bag of chips for some extra $$$.

I was at my regular diesel station that underwent the change. But I didn't realize it yet. There was a line of vehicles waiting to refuel and I thought WTF. Seemed I waited forever. When I finally worked my way up to the pump, I found the pumps had been slowed to 2 gals/minute. I needed about 60 gals, which would have taken 30 minutes to pump. Screw that.

So I bought 10 gals and went to a different station. I've never gone back. And I didn't buy any chips or soda ....

You are not supposed to leave the pump while you are filling so are you sure that is the reason for slow pumps?

At one of the stations with slow pumps it's sometimes hard to find anyone near a pump while it is filling. Inside doing shopping or reading a magazine. o_O

I’ll honk my horn if that happens. If the a-hole that comes out gives me a “look”, I give them a “look” right back.
Usually my “look” results in them scurrying off.

I’m not a big fan of the Bucees station. It’s overpriced crap promoted to tourist attraction levels but I do like getting fuel there. There’s 120 pumps so there’s always empty ones. They also have diesel on every pump and at least 20 pumps with ethanol free gas where most stations only have a 1-2 pumps with diesel.

We'll stop at one if we need a bathroom because they're always spotless but we normally travel in our RV so have our own. They're talking about putting one in our county but I hope not because the exits are always backed up onto the freeway.

They do that but we’d have probably had an increase in property taxes by now if it wasn’t for Bucees. They pay loads of sales tax.

I’d say it’s great news.
8-10 year financing? That’s crazy.

I took out a nine year loan when my 1990 F250 was new to have reasonable payments while I was paying down my mortgage. The truck interest was tax deductible while the mortgage interest was not. The interest rates were the same. I later built a new house and needed a new mortgage. They let me lower the truck payment to $15.00 a month until I payed everything off about 18 months later. I think the truck was about 13 years old at the time. I've still been using that truck to carry my snowmobile until I broke my arm three weeks ago.
