I had a Rottweiler that would NOT leave my side. When we moved to a new rental house I put him in the front yard that had a chain link fence. About an hour later I saw him standing next to me in the back yard. I went out front and he had torn the fence apart in one corner. He pushed himself thru the fence pealing the fencing clips apart. After that, he had to stay indoors if he couldn’t be with me. Luckily the rental was only a short time before we moved to Idaho ranch. Once on the open land, he would simply stay with us all the time. No fence needed. He never wondered. I’d go horse back riding with him and he would dutifully follow behind.

My former insurance agent had a GSD and we were comparing dog stories. Mine would break out of her airline approved crate. Her dog tore one of the wire crates apart with his teeth to get out of it.
Recently I was talking to somebody who has a lab/german shorthair mix. They have the lever style door handles... he opens them to go out.

I do not know about Beagle/Border mix but if you look in the dictionary under "crazy" you will see a picture of our Chihuahua/Beagle mix. Outside of the yard fence she MUST be on a leash, once out that nose starts working and she can see nor hear anything else but following her nose. And no amount of training has helped

He was stray/runaway and now comes home on his own in a reasonable time. First time he ran into the woods he showed up 9 miles away and had to be retrieved.

Mine a masters of the sliding door, .5 seconds when the coast is clear.
Longer for turning knobs and screen door but.....
I did have GP that would jump through open UPPER window pane and closed screen when "needed"

In a round about way.,.. the collar tag did it's job. Once their German Shepard had him pinned on the ground they got he number and called. He's used to being pinned by the girls here... or carried by his head. Never harmed just a lot of squeals.

Beagles are great dogs, but they aren't happy unless they're running.

My little brown Cocker Spaniel - Brownie -has been "chipped". Mixed feeling about collars out here in the country. A neighbors dog got his collar caught in old barbed wire and the local coyotes ended his happy days.

I will not put a collar on a dog I own. Nuff said on this subject....

A friend's two labs were playing while the family watched. One got his tooth caught in the other's collar, strangling him. By the time Dave got a knife and cut it the dog was clinically dead. His wife is a doctor and got it revived but it still wasn't doing well. They were friends with the vet so rushed him over where they brought the dog back completely.

No collar means stray or dumped in these parts. We have no animal control in the county, cost you $$$ to drop one in a neighboring county. Limits options. I don't have a chip reader and the nearest vet is an hour drive.
Plenty of stretch or break away collars on the market.
However you do what is right for you with no complaints from me. We all have our way and that is perfectly ok.
Mine never see a leash and free to roam when out side. Collars are loose enough to pull head through, except Rheda her head won't fit though a 26" collar just big enough for her neck. Can't find anything other than chokers, chain or metal buckle bigger and she is still bulking up. Still looking for something, I use plastic buckles because they can bust them when needed.
Girls had their second birthday on the 7th

I do want something to grab a hold and hold/drag a dog when needed. Not like I can pick them up.
