My young dog disappeared one day I turned my place upside down looking for him. Then I went out neighbor to neighbor and in to every field. Distraught I came home and started retracing my steps...finally remembering I got something out of the cargo trailer. When I opened the door there the little basturd was  :ROFLMAO:
I locked my cat in the gun safe one time the same way...

Or you could teach them how to be off leash and out of a fence. Alot of dogs never get trained this and dont know what to do when they are.
I'm trying, I'm trying!!!
Actually, mine is doing good for a 5 1/2 month old pup. He goes into the woods with me every day and never gets more than about 50 feet away.

Best way I have used to train puppy to hang around is to go into the woods with them. There a bit scared so tend to hang close. We used to fool our dogs if they wondered away by hiding behind a tree, but keeping an eye on them. When they noticed we were gone they would run back in a panic looking for me. It got to where they would keep an eye out for me while walking. All my doge have always hung around me and don’t wonder too far. All come running if called

If I only had a dollar for every time this has happened... Missing dog... look and look and call... nothing! Start going to each building, garage, shed, etc. opening doors until we find her sitting there staring at the door with a look of "What? And why did it take you so long to open the door?"

My dog disappeared once years ago. I'd left her tied up outside while I went hunting for a couple of hours... a couple of hours turned into all day, then I set traps for a couple of hours. When I came home she had slipped her chain and was gone.
I went to the local general store but they hadn't heard anything. Drove up and down the road with my headlights in the ditch looking for a carcass...called the local radio station and had them run an ad, then started driving the woods roads in back of my house touching off my .357 as she came to gunshots.
I finally went home and started walking the highway with a flashlight. I'd heard the neighbor's dog bark a couple of times and it sounded amazingly similar to mine. As I stood next to my driveway he barked again so I shined my light on him... he was sound asleep!
My dog had gone up onto the balcony of the second floor apartment. She was great at going upstairs but couldn't get back down. I hadn't knocked on any doors over there because nobody was home. Other than my house it was the safest place where she could have been.

It is most rewarding to have your dog trained. My little Brownie( brown Cocker Spaniel) will only venture out when we are together and walking down the driveway. Never goes off the driveway unless I venture out first. The concern here - coyotes. I swear - they can be completely hidden behind two standing stalks of field grass.

Brownie usually smells them before I can see them. They must never be too hungry. One loud shout and they are gone - like a wisp of smoke.

Summer outings to the far edge of the property. Unfortunately - I always carry my rifle. We now have introduced wolves in our area. I really do not want to find out if a loud shout will deter a wolf.

There is the other theory, have dogs that make the coyotes not want to be there in the first place. ;)

I fully agree with having trained dogs to do what you want and smaller dogs should not attempt things that can be detrimental to their health.

I had a few runners, each time I would get my eyes off them they would run... Not sure if I did anything different with them but in hindsight yes it was lack of training or knowledge on my part. (poor recall & training) was a big part but some dogs simply seem to be more prone to run and some seen to be prone to stay close... I can't complain with current 3 dogs especially my lab and GSD they constantly check in (look back to me or come back to see me on their own) when in the bush... that being said I don't leave them untended outside unless they are tied up at my house in town... I also do the walk around the propriety line and show them to respect it. The problem I have with the tag is they always loose them they simply don't last and the cling cling get pretty annoying in the house.

^different breeds are more/less prone to these behaviors. Our GSD is exactly like yours, I think. Works close. Keeps her people in view and comes racing back when called.

The Kangals are much more independent and stubborn. (And dumb)

One of the big brutes loves to go through the fence if she smells something interesting. The GSD will watch her, but stay on our side. When the Kangal comes back, the GSD will give her a 'correction' even though she's 30 lbs lighter.

My first dog used to leave her collar in the woods... and that was the least of her antics. She hated to be confined and made Harry Houdini look like an amateur. I used to have to kennel her on occasion... when I tried a new place I'd ask to look at the enclosures. They never bwlieved me when I told them what they'd need to do differently... invariably when I returned I would hear escape stories. I never said "I told you so" but certainly wanted to. 🤷‍♂️

I was supposed to drop her off one morning but had a change of plans at the last minute. That day the kennel burned, 4 dogs died in the fire.

I wanted to say ''holy s^%$ good thing your plan changed'' but then your dog would've escape if she was better then Houdini. 🤷‍♂️

jokes aside good things your plan changed, everything happen for a reason.

@Jstpssng bringing back memories. We had a pair of GSDs who were escape artists.

They were kicked out of at least one boarding facility. We had a chain link kennel for when we needed them outside. They chewed their way out (yes, damaged their teeth).

I had one chew through field fencing every time it thundered and one that climbed over 8 foot of field fence and multiple strands of barb wire. I gave up on her and she became a house dog what she wanted to be...
Now I have to lock the doors because the Anatolians have learned to work every bloody door not locked.

As we speak, the Anatolians are pawing at the back door so I will put them inside. 'Cold' front is heading in. (Low should hit 25 or so, haha). They need to stay out and enjoy the weather.

I can't leave one of them unattended in the laundry room (where they have indoor crates and a dog door to a large kennel) because she gets bored and chews the drywall. I put up some cheap beadboard...barely slowed her down. She is either in a crate, getting some inside time with us, or running around outside with her sister and the GSD.

Those two monsters are like sumo wrestlers. Up on their hind legs, snarling and pushing.

It gets better once they hit about 4 they settle down a lot. Improvement does not seem to start until almost 2 though.
Now add a crazy Beagle/Border mix and the violence level goes through the roof with no dog harmed.
I feel sorry for my GP male, the girls scare him on purpose all the time. I have to perp walk him to the door to go outside, they will cut him off from all exits every darn night.

I do not know about Beagle/Border mix but if you look in the dictionary under "crazy" you will see a picture of our Chihuahua/Beagle mix. Outside of the yard fence she MUST be on a leash, once out that nose starts working and she can see nor hear anything else but following her nose. And no amount of training has helped
