The ATT farm cell tower project is officially dead.

ATT did all the engineering, soil samples, permits and approvals… it was a green light that was 3 years in the making but a shift at ATT corp cancelled many towers in the works…

The farm was not without costs which were mostly lawyer for contract review.

Maybe cell tower tech has peaked?

I was very surprised in Washington where no cell existed to have solid T-Mobil now.

Neighbor said it was tied to emergency services campaign to be able to reach as many as possible when needed. Verizon in same location has no service so it would seem no tower sharing?

AT&T didn't build in our neighborhood either, so no cell service improvement here either.

5G drives a need for more towers closer together, so perhaps other towers went in below the farm, eliminating the need?

As far as I have seen, site sharing is not uncommon, but the only tower sharing I have seen was on some towers belonging to third parties, e.g. radio masts, tall billboards, etc. I could see that from an RF perspective, having someone else transmitting next to your receivers would be a headache and a half.

All the best, Peter

I have to Deal with ATT and corporate networks.
ATT is now a shell of it's former self and I don't think it has enough revenue to put in new infrastructure unless it can pay back quickly.

Many of the towers around here have multiple antenna on them. As I understand it there are minimum separation required and the tower builder usually puts theirs on top were it has the best coverage.

No improvement to existing service or new towers in the area.

There is lots of talk about urban boundary limit so it could be thinking future growth will be limited?

All of the survey stakes remain and the site chosen would seem optimal for the valley…

If ATT reverses course at a later date it may be too late as the approved site is outside the urban boundary.

There is a push by the community to “Preserve” the farm open space… with the majority of the farm becoming open space…

The original hope was for the tower lease to offset some of the annual 36k property tax bill as farm falls short of the minimum required acreage for AG designation…

The availability of cellular service via satellite is slowing new tower construction.

We switched to T-Mobile from US Cellular about a year ago and get much better service and coverage. T-Mobile have been investing in Rural areas adding Band 71/600Mhz, which is a longer wavelength signal that travels further, and trees, etc don't effect it as much.

When I first moved to where I'm living now, there was weak T-Mobile cell signal in maybe two spots on the property, if lucky. Since then, PG&E has cut a lot of trees down for fire safety. Coincidentally, the cell tower signal has greatly improved. Maybe 5G, maybe a push for better coverage? I don't know, but my pet theory is that trees that were blocking signal have been removed.

Odd thing is Generac’s new cellular device can scan and use best service, whether that’s Verizon, at&t, whatever. Didnt think that was even a thing.

AT&T is in the forefront to eliminate land line phones, there are a few other large carriers involved too.
