I'll use my phone GPS even if I know the way to where I'm going. For these reasons "GPS unit is a REALLY NICE MAP that will not only get you from point A to point B, it'll tell you how far it is, how much time you have left, elevations, speed, time zones, etc...". Plus it keeps me half ways GPS proficient so that I can use it when I really need too.

People by nature are resistant to change however, in the computer industry you have to embrace change or be left behind.

I have no doubt AI is is the same way maybe even faster.

Thought I’d share a quick story about ai usefulness. I have a website that I set up for our neighborhood using a product called HumHub. It’s basically a private Facebook like platform. I was having problems with some features not working correctly due to the hosting company that I was using, so I had to move the site to a new hosting provider. There were quite a few issues with the migration to the new platform, to the point that the site was nonfunctional for a couple of days. Between ChatGPT and perplexity.com, I was able to resolve all of the issues and the site is functional again, without the original problems that I was having with the old hosting company.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that without these tools, I’d still be muddling through this problem and would probably be ready to give up. I know that there are plenty of nefarious uses for them, but I’m trying to keep it in the spirit of the thread subject. :)

There is an auto repair shop on social media that I follow because they make some interesting videos. They decided to give AI a shot at repairing some vehicles and had really good results. AI walked them through an electrical module issue and the testing required to troubleshoot the fault and recorded the entire process. They were impressed with the outcome. I use it frequently to document instructions for my faculty/staff as well as to fix issues I have with applications or even systems. You have to learn to focus your questions and narrow down the correct information you are needing.

Agreed. It definitely gives better responses the more specific the questions. Your examples are really interesting. I’d never thought about troubleshooting automotive issues with ai, but that really is a great idea.

I was using Google Earth to look at something at work, just simple confirm distance from EOP (edge of pavement) to a feature (ditch), and noticed a new "premium" AI feature, they now can high light specific infrastructure features, and tag them. Stuff like storm drain curb inlets, ect.

Dont remember what it was, Google Earth, Basemap, ArcGIS, or what, but they had a layer that showed "driveway connections per square mile", I assume as a way to determine population density?

Oh, great. I can only see township supervisors using that same tech, with "find all un-permitted structures in this township."

That kinda stuff is maybe my main fear of AI, the ability to enforce dozens of stupid harmless law violations. It really would take nothing to set up a couple cameras and just ticket everyone speeding; and i dont mean Speeding, I mean speeding. Turn signals, even on an empty road, not getting building permit to replace exterior door, even down to code enforcement tickets, for stupid stuff. Think if some of these super HOAs did it; the ones that argue about your white mail box being the wrong color of white.

My county is pretty laid back (for now) about a lot of stuff, BUT, if you read the actual rules; a building permit is required for any non-agricultural fence, irrigation, and other stuff; not even counting structural changes like replacing a door. I doubt they would know what to do if you tried to pull a fence permit?

When I put in our pool, I was able to slide it thru under the above-ground pool permit even though it's in-ground, because the pool shell product we used was certified for above-ground installations. When I expanded our carriage barn to 2 floors, the township officer told me "we're not going to even bother with a permit, if no one is living in it". I have four wood sheds that are at 96% of the allowable size for structures erected without a permit, but all of which will measure over the threshold when viewed from the sky, due to larger roof overhangs. Apparently, a prior owner never obtained permits when they finished our basement or 3rd floors, even digging the basement out to a deeper depth for better ceiling clearance and drainage installation.

Point being, there are more than a few things the township could easily harass me with, if the tools make it easy enough to do so. Until now, I think the main thing keeping everyone sane is the high effort required to pursue such stuff.

Off topic for this thread, but a good example of the mentality of some townships, in keeping with this latest thread tangent.
