To keep a good heating fire going all night, the single best thing you can do is to drink a full glass of water before turning in.

That will assure that you will get up in the middle of the night, or early morning, to pee, and then you can add a stick or two to the stove while you are up!

It works for me!

;-)

How about sleeping without a blanket. When you get cold, it's time to get the fire going. You can probably tell that I don't heat with wood any more.;)

I use wood PELLETS! With my hopper extension it will go 2 full days, or more ... Depending on where the thermostat is set and what it's like outside ...

I heat with firewood and LP, burning wood is definitely more expensive than LP.
I believe wood pellets is probably the most expensive heat you can buy, it’s very nice heat but very expensive.

I might have to try that because my stove doesn't make it through the night.

How is firewood more expensive than LP? My firewood is "free". That being said, I am refurbishing my wood stove (new refractory boards, door gaskets and paint job) and going from single wall to double wall stove pipe. So my burn this year will be starting with a $500 outlay.

Clearly, propane is a LOT cheaper where you live than it is here. Definitely one of the more expensive options.
Lot of people I know use pellets, but the stoves are too noisy to want in living space.
I like my woodstove. I've had to buy wood (grapple loads) for the last 10 years or so, but it's still way cheaper than any other option. Yeah, there's the work involved to cut, split, stack and move the wood, but as long as I'm physically able I'll be doing it. Good April project...you want to be outside, but with the ground still frozen there's not much to do.

Unless we have an extremely cold night (teens or more below), my stove keeps the house comfortable all night. Then again "comfortable" for me would be low-mid 60s.

I'd be interested to know what your wood and LP costs are, as that is exactly backwards around here. However, I will note that people who heat with wood seem to keep the temp quite a bit higher than other sources...

Here is a form you can fill out with your costs to get a comparison:

With some relatively accurate numbers for VT, here is how it plays out (efficiency of the device can have a large affect).
