46F, moist, and overcast @ 14:45, only calling for a high of 48F for the day ... will not be doing any outside work today ...

Low this morning was 43.5F, nearby LWS reports yesterday's rainfall was 0.19".

Did not get Menards order completed.

Instead I mostly worked on researching/pricing components for a bulk water storage system.

Was pleasantly surprised to find that it appears to a very cost effective solution, as David suggested. At least compared to having a new well drilled.

Main components that would be needed that I don't already have are:

1. Storage tank (or tanks)

2. Float switch to turn off the submersible pump in the well when the storage tank or tanks are full.

3. Booster pump to provide pressure for the house.

4. Sanitation (UV light and/or other solutions)

Total cost could be as low as $1800 to $2000 not including sales tax. That assumes my labor (free) to cobble it together.

The maximum width of the door going into the utility room is 36" ... if the door and trim is removed.

It looks like that would limit the tank size to 300 gallon or less.

Chem-Tainer offers a 300 gallon vertical tank that has a 34.5" diameter and is 84 3/4" tall and has a 3 year warranty.

Complies with FDA standards 21 CFR 177.1520 (1) 3.1 and 3.2 and uses a UV Stablized Resin to prolong tank life. Excellent impact resistance. Features a 16" Vented Manway, 1-1/2" inlet, and 2" outlet. Weighs 87 lbs.

National Tank Outlet has it available for $540 from their various warehouses in the US:

300 Gallon Chem-Tainer Black Plastic Vertical Water Storage Tank

Closest to me is in PA, over by Harrisburg. Freight would be $275 to $335 depending on whether it's going to a residential or commercial location. Could save the freight if I go and pick it up.

Initial quick check on a Square D float switch looks like in the ballpark of $140.

1/2 HP Little Giant shallow well pump from Menards is $240 (before rebate)

UV sterilizer is $250 to $500 depending on model from Menards (before rebate)

Total outlay looks to be $1170 (on the low side) to $1960 (on the high side), depending on whether 1 or 2 tanks and the particular UV sterilizer selected. That assumes I make the trip to pick up the tank (or tanks) at the warehouse in PA.

Should pretty much have all the pipe (1" PVC + 3/4" copper), fittings and valves already in inventory that would be needed to plumb it.

Open to any thoughts and other input ... want to make sure I don't miss anything.

Not sure what all will be on the agenda for the rest of the day but I'm sure something will turn up ... ;)

Hope everyone is having a decent day ... (y)
Any chance that you could put your tank outside? Your well will be adding 54F water, and you keep drawing water from it, so with a little insulation it might be ok. I don't know how close you are to Lake Erie and the storms.

FWIW: This is the style float switch I have been using. Going on 11 years or so.

The last one I bought was made in Argentina of all places.

All the best,

Peter

Good (Thursday) morning. Overnight Low of 5.2C and it's presently 18.6C, clear & calm. There was 16.4mm in the gauge @0900.

Yesterday's 'into town' excursion went well... there was a surprising two cases of wine at the PO. Turned out that the Wine Faeries are servicing someone else in town but the PO assumed that it was all for me. :) Once I'd opened it, I realised it wasn't anything that I'd drink and took it back to the PO.

Went to bed with a 'scratchy throat'. It's not incapacitating (so far), which is a very good thing as today I've got a dental check-up and then, later on, a medical assessment/plan appointment.

I'm very disappointed with the BOM who have revamped their website = I can't find anything!!!😡🤬

That's about it, take care all.
My thoughts go out to the people in Alaska effected by the typhoon.
??? Nothing heard down here.

RS,, if you go with two 300 gallon tanks, don't forget to plumb them both together at the bottom with at least 1.5" pipe and vent them both at the top. I wouldn't keep them outside unless they were in a well insulated building and the tanks themselves were well insulated. Every time I have been to Ohio in the winter time I froze my tail off.

Good Tractor Morning RS,
Interesting read on your well issues. I went through all of this back in early to mid 90’s. I originally had our well pounded back in 1982 when we built our house. Around 94 or so my wife Kathleen is complaining that by mid morning we are running out of water. With 2 pre teens and showers and wash I had to do something. The original well was pounded through bedrock to a depth of 125 ft. I called in Connecticut Well and they brought in a rotary drill. We went down to 450 ft and still not getting much in the way of results. We were only getting about 1 1/2 gals per minute. They brought in their fracking equipment and we managed to increase that to 3 GPM. But our static level was at about 40 ft. We hung the new pump at 400 ft so 50 ft from the bottom. That gave us over 350 ft of reserve water so 350 x 1.5 gals per ft or over 525 gals of water before we run dry. We have never run dry since redrilling the well. Yes you are correct on rock in New England, everything is rock out here 😉.
The just of my story is that the fracking did clean the veins in the well to a point where a noticeable increase in in flow occurred.

So best of luck my friend 🍀🙏

Good Tractor Morning,
Ct, 44 to start going to 56. Looks to be a nice fall day, and it also looks like work today.

Yesterday I got a new DX Engineering OCF dipole that will cover 40m , 20m , 10m and 6 m. The balun can handle 3000 watts , unlike my current OVF dipole that can only handle 300 watts. Looks like I might need a linear amplifier on the station add on list 😉😃
I spent a good deal of time out in my side yard yesterday afternoon getting the antenna up in one of my taller shagbark hickory trees. But I have one leg on the dipole that is not correctly hung. I ran out of daylight and will need to do more work later today or Friday. I do have the center up at about 70 ft so that was one accomplishment 😉
I’m looking at the Elecraft KPA500 amplifier. With the proper setup you can reliably get 600 watts output from this unit. Presently I’m only at 100 watts so a fairly hefty increase.

Drew sorry to hear about all the issues with your camper. The dealer obviously wants that money in his pocket and not yours.

Kyle, difficult reading about all the issues you have to deal with your daughter. God Bless you and your family for everything you deal with 🙏

Hope all have a safe and blessed day 🙏

good morning all
slow start this morning, enjoying my coffee and a cranberry muffin

cooler weather has set in and our first frost warning posted for tonight.
Might cut some of my roses this afternoon for an arrangement

I have a jet pump here for water and it is terrible. Poor water pressure, design stirs up sediment.
At least it's never run out of water. Sure wish they had installed a submersible originally. This pump motor in basement is
so loud when it runs, and it runs every time the toilet is flushed.

friend coming over this afternoon to help me make bed in rv with clean sheets. Takes contortions to do,
would likely throw my back out so she said no problem.
I have had constant problems with the sheets popping off the mattress.
have considered just getting a sleeping bag for ease but...

went and looked at a Rockwood travel trailer yesterday, it was ok, but dealership is a problem.
Terrible reviews online, mostly from folks with poorly constructed rv's complaining the dealer did not catch
the problems before delivery. Am guessing a lot of covid era issues. And yet the dealer wants 1200 dollars to do
prep on the unit. And another 1500 for delivery, so 2700 in tacked on fees.
Longer I spent there, longer I realized I'd be keeping my motorhome because they won't offer me a decent deal.
The sales lady confirmed valuations on motorhomes had "tanked".

read that rv sales folks get paid 20 percent or so of profit on deal, so they are motivated to jack up the profit
as much as possible.

started sniffling yesterday and haven't stopped.
hope you all have a great day
