The discussion of subsidies for EV/solar/wind is interesting. It's tough to find unbiased information, but the lowest number I could find for subsidies for the fossil fuel industry in the US is about $20 billion per year. That's no justification but it shows that EV subsidies aren't unique.
What are those "subsidies" though? In the past when I tried to find out it seemed like simply writing off expenses... just like any business does.

Edit: here's a Forbes article which refutes my statement above, but also does the same for the subsidy argument.

That's why it's so hard to find unbiased information. The $20 billion, which was the lowest number I could find, was unique industry specific tax breaks and direct subsidies for oil & gas. Some clearly biased sources had numbers like $700 billion, but they were counting intangibles like "reduced quality of life due to pollution".

Those subsidies exist because we need petroleum products for national defense. Even in a mythical world where we have enough wind and solar and batteries to have EV tanks, we still need lubrication.

There is no national security rationale for wind and solar.

We need to streamline the nuclear plant process.

It wouldn't surprise me if the auto manufacturers were/are pushing for DPF and SCR. Both technologies/components put a lot of money in their pocket. The upfront charge for the equipment and then the increase in repair costs. It's probably one of the costliest repairs you can make. My daughters Ram was having issues with her DEF tank level. Of course they don't just sell the level sensors, you have to buy the entire tank, sensor and pump system.

In 2024 the top 5 oil producers (Shell, BP, Chevron, ExxonMobil, and TotalEnergies) had combined profits of $102 billion. Why do they need subsidies? Sounds like big government handouts to me.

Agreed.

I would have to see verified, quanitified numbers for said subsidies before I could even form an opinion. I merely broached the subject because I often see petroleum subsidies brough up but been unable to find out what they are.

Never heard of anyone having to buy the tank before.

The rest is probably all in one unit, so it makes sense if the pump, heater, and sensor comes as one. And those are available even on eBay.

Time for a different dealer maybe?

It's also worth checking to see if the DEF head is still covered under a warranty. Emissions stuff typically has a longer warranty than the rest of the vehicle. The DEF head in my RV is warranted for 10 years and some people report successfully getting a reimbursement for one they had changed already.

Picking individual years is not a way to judge. Neither is lumping the top 5 in without including everyone.

Out of context 'profit' doesnt say much.

Our national interest is to ensure they continue to explore domestic sources.

It's tough to find unbiased information
info today: a thousand lemon-aid stands many selling the same thing (often an ideology represented as a product)

Once you introduce politics in the mix not only does the science get skewed, the cost and logistics gets the "shell game"
Fear is the headline.. it works on people's hearts and minds. It's pretty much a common tactic for attention.

Subsidies for fossil fuels has a historical pay off as the modern world today was built using fossil fuels

we will remain fundamentally dependent on the fossil fuels for quite some time .....a reasonable conclusion if people stop for a moment and realize just how much fossil fuels contribute to our livelihoods.

Think about these mainstay indispensable materials. cement, steel, plastics, and ammonia (fertilizer) Where would be today without these products (would not exist without fossil fuels)

The USA is the odd one out most of the developed world is heading this way to avoid destruction of the world via climate change The USA will need to fall into line or it will be forced to by the new world powers that will be in charge by then
As of August 2025, at least 27 European Union (EU) countries have legally committed to banning the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2035. In addition to the EU, several major non-EU countries—including the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, South Korea, China (as policy target), and smaller nations such as Iceland and ******—have set out similar plans or public policy targets for ending the sale of new fossil-fuel vehicles by 2035. Some countries have formalised these plans with legislation, while others are in advanced discussions or have strong government proposals.

Countries with Formal Plans or Active Discussion for 2035 Ban

  • EU27: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden
  • United Kingdom
  • Canada
  • Japan (hybrids may still be permitted)
  • South Korea
  • China (policy target includes Hong Kong and Macau)
  • Iceland
  • ******
  • Chile
  • Thailand (proposal, but not legally binding yet)
  • Liechtenstein
  • New Zealand (signatory to accelerated adoption; formal ban date is 2040 but engaged in the 2035 conversation)
  • Norway (target for 2025, even stronger than 2035)
  • Singapore (diesel and petrol bans, final phase out by 2040, with strong actions by 2030 and 2035)
  • India (certain states with strong 2035-2040 plans)
Estimates from widely cited sources place the total at more than 30 countries that either have official legislation, binding government intent, or are in advanced public discussions about banning the sale of new petrol and/or diesel vehicles by 2035. Some countries, such as Norway and Singapore, have set even earlier targets, while others like the United States have state-level commitments (e.g. California) but not a national-level ban for 2035.

Key Points

  • All 27 EU countries will fully ban new petrol/diesel car sales by 2035.
  • More than 30 countries worldwide (including key non-EU economies) have legislation, official government proposals, or strong national discussions about a 2035 ban on new internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.
  • Scope and details may differ, for instance, some allow hybrids, while others enforce stricter criteria.
  • Several other countries have 2040 or later as their official ban year, but are signatories to international declarations aiming for the "as close as possible to 2035" goal.
This number may continue to increase as climate policies evolve and other countries formal

They are phasing out ice generators…
Maybe in Cali. But go into the local sams club after a natural disaster or snow storm.

They will have 4 pallets packed by the door with ice generators loaded up on them.

Are you frickin kidding me?!?! 🤣
Ummm, do you think tools were a bit less capable then?

Like railroads in 1867 were built by men with picks & shovels. Today’s earthmoving equipment, trucks, excavators, etc. is 100 times faster!

As if any of that relates to what I said. The speed at which something COULD be done means nothing when there are things in the way of doing it. To turn that around, if today's earth moving equipment, etc, where let loose with nothing in the way, maybe those RR's would be done in a couple months, instead of years and with far less loss of life and limb.

Come on! LOL That was the biggest boondoggle in California’s history!

🤣

Did you just spin around, lean forward and put your arms out palms up? Just like the old vaudeville actors did? Means nothing.

Naah you cant, the European Union bans ICE in 2035 too, so you guys ought to grow our food 🤪🙈
There's plenty of space in Africa and South America. Russia will be looking to make some money soon.

Now they just need to work on the "magic delivery" system.

Would you be okay with taxes on the gas powered tools that funded subsidies on the battery tools? Meaning if price was the same would you mind using battery or is that added weight a deal breaker?
Guess I'm the odd man out here. I LIKE internal combustion. I like the smell, the sound, the feel of them. That's why I will never go EV. Those are just appliances to me. I don't care what I have to pay for fuel.
I'm also the the guy that still uses hand tools such as wrenches and ratchets.....even changing tires on my big rigs when I had them. I never use power tools or impacts.
My impact is a breaker bar with a 4 foot pipe on it, LOL

/ 12 States to ban diesel vehicles #159
Want to add to my post....I'm not calling anyone's EV an appliance. Just saying people like me have a passion for internal combustion and machinery and stuff like that. We love being able to work on our own stuff and modify it.
Whereas lots of people don't care about that, they only want transportation.

And I'm terribly old school and I hate change.....any kind of change.

Okay, that's funny. Beyond unrealistic, which will make it interesting to watch it (not) happen.

Or, Europe might become a second Cuba and keep the older usable vehicles going for several decades if the EU is indeed idiotic enough to stick with their pipe dreams.
