Common gray squirrel, or something else?

I've been watching mine and other dogs chase squirrels my whole life. But never once have I ever seen a dog manage to actually catch one. Our local squirrels seem to be faster, more agile, and maybe even a little smarter than most dogs.

That said, I have seen squirrels fall out of trees at least twice I can remember. One time, mom and I were raking leaves in the back yard, our property was covered in absolutely massive 3' diameter oaks. We heard something crashing down thru the layers of tree canopy over our heads, and both instinctively ducked, expecting a broken branch was making it's way down toward us. A second or three later, a squirrel landed on the ground next to my mother.

I had a weiney dog catch a squirrel. He came up to the back door and knocked to come inside with what I thought was his toy plastered to the glass door.

This was normal for him to knock and press his toy to the glass.

I let him inside. He went straight to my wife, she started freaking just before he got to her but I couldn't quite understand what she was getting at.

At this point he hopped up into her lap and dropped a live squirrel in my wife's lap.

She freaked, I realized at this point what happened when the squirrel went running up her shoulder and onto the back of the chair, then it hit the floor.

Thankfully I had enough sense to open the door back up, and the dogs herded the squirrel back outside

After that, I was required to turn on the outside light and verify what was in the dogs mouth before opening the door

She's a love bug and cuddle muffin. And mouthy!!!!!

She definitely has the husky attitude and is a chatty Kathy

She gets overly hyper if you go out in the pen. It helps to pick up one of her squeeky toys and start squeeking it.

It triggers the zoomies and she burns off some excess energy.

If i take gypsy out with me, she calms down considerably though and easier to manage.

At least she's got a 1/2 acre pen to run in instead of a little 20ft run she had before.

Loves watching the deer. She's got a doe and twin fawns that have been hanging out with her almost nightly.

I don't think that a lot of people understand the breed that they get, like say your Huskey . . . I have seen people get one (Huskey) and the person lives in the city and has an apartment . . . they need land and a lot of exercise, nature of the breed.

Or lazy and sleep all of the time like my sister in law. She thinks walking her around the driveway is enough exercise for her. Then she's inside ignoring her the rest of the day I told her she needed to spend a lot more time with her, as well as giving her a job.

Sasha is a year old, and hasn't been trained at all. So i've been working with her as much as I can.

But my wife got injured 6 months ago and has had reconstructive surgery on her elbow (4th surgery last week)

So, i've been busy.

And I get really frustrated with my sister in law over the pooch.

Common grey, and the dog in my avatar picture is the culprit. He misses more than he catches, but get successful about every 1-2 weeks. Jumps about 5 feet in the air, and if I want to stay ahead of him with the atv can't let the speedometer drop below 25.

My previous lab mix could outrun anything in the area. Checked with 2 vehicle speedometers and the atv speedometer mentioned above and he could run beside you at 45. And the only dog that I ever knew of that would use trees, fence post, the ground, or any other hard object to beat things against. Never will forget the day I saw him have a half grown coyote by the back of the neck and beating it against an 2 foot diameter oak tree. And that coyote had a 300 yard lead on him. Yote made it about 100 yards before being caught.

Meet HoneyBear. She's a 9 month old Catahoula working dog in training. Catahoula dogs are notoriously bullheaded so we don't actively 'train' her but she watches what we do and then she duplicates the task. She also learns from our 7 yo Catahoula dogs.

Wow. Even our mini pinschers, who were bred specifically for small varment hunting in German barns, never managed to catch a squirrel in the open.

Our current dog ain't catching anything, but she's a good watch dog, barking at each delivery person that comes onto the property.

My last dog caught a flying squirrel. I don't know how, I was out tapping trees and noticed he was licking something. I went over and he had completely soaked that thing with drool. It was still alive but I doubt it stayed that way as wet as it was.
It may have been sick in the first place.
On another occasion I was driving down the road on my tractor with hom running along beside me. Suddenly he dashed off into the woods and came back out with a grouse in his mouth.
Er, the season doesn't start until next month!

My first lab used to catch rabbits.

This one ^ goes BONKERS over pictures or video of dogs (especially herself) or any other animals, also cartoon characters, anything with googly eyes (like the Pop Tart commercials). If a commercial comes on TV with a dog in it she jumps off the chair and runs up to the TV barking until it goes away. She is fairly demur around other animals that are real, although she will chase deer out of the yard.

Have never really seen other dogs react to pictures/video of animals like that.

One of our cats likes to face time with one of our kids. He seems to enjoy it when she talks to him. He'll stare at the screen and if she moves out of view to one side or the other, he'll look behind the phone to see where she went. Seems to enjoy it.

He also likes watching Have Gun Will Travel.

Another reason I like dogs more than most people.

The first time I worked in NY we were staying at a little inn in the Adirondacks. The owner liked my dog and would go get her if I left her in my room. One night she was laying on the floor minding her own business chewing on a bone. Someone thought he'd impress the waitress by teasing my dog, and tried to take her bone.
It was the only time in 14 years that she ever snarled at anybody; also the only tims in my life I ever levitated. One second I was sitting at the bar; the next I was 10 feet away and had lifted her off the floor by the scruff of her neck. "You -do-not-growl-at-people!"
He even said it was his fault. Furthermore
I should have intervened sooner. But if she wanted to hang out in public places she had to understand that some people are a-holes but she's just a dog. Otherwise she can stay in the truck.

I understand, my working dog, I really don't have to keep him away from people most of the time because he does it on his own (he likes to hang out with his animals)

There's only one person who knows the dogs well enough to come through the gate and the dogs still put up a fuss. Fortunately most people would probably OK but they don't know that.... I can't really say what happens if that person or anyone else came here when we weren't home.

If I go to the gate and let someone in and make introductions it's a different deal, mostly. Seriously these dogs and German sheps I've have always before Catahoulas were good judges of people. If the dogs won't settle down I don't want the visit.

She just got back from the groomer in that picture and they always dress her up like that. They only last for a few minutes before she yanks them out. She has a cammo sweater that better suits her personality.

My shepherds twin Brother is very protective.

There were only 3 people that could enter my daughters home when they weren't there.

Their old roomate, my wife, and I.

When I walked into the house, he would run around screaming like a little girl, then demand belly rubs.

If a stranger walked into the house, he would bite them.
